Chara really hates Soriel and relishes little triumphs like this. That image was Sans’ real mom. Alphys thought an image of his mom would help him associate Toriel with the idea of “mom” instead of a big scary monster to help him calm down. Good job Alphys. The reason he remembers his mom (but as a human) but not his name is he doesn’t actually remember her. His heart tells him “dat’s mom. gimme a hug” his head says “what? no. it can’t be. i don’t remember anything.” so put together, it’s “differenty mom, but i couldn’t tell you her name or anything about her. but i miss her so much…” This Frisk did the same thing, but he flirted with Toriel less because he had a crush on her and more because she seemed lonely and he thought she could use a compliment. Then he realized it could be misconstrued so he called her "mom" just to make things clear.

i guess it's a little odd at times. So... Sans and Frisk had an argument about who had a harder time getting the happy ending. they decide to settle the argument by doing a fully immersive VR simulation(kinda like sword art online) to walk a mile in each other's shoes. so now sans is taking frisk's journey through the underground (with no memories so he doesn't cheat by knowing everything) and frisk takes the pace of sans as a monster who knows everything but can't do anything. (save, reset). Through Sans' eyes we see "undertale" but with a lot more comedy. and through Frisk's eyes we see things sans might have gone through. i hope this helps.
