Oh wow, thanks for the info!

Ha, I too collect ensamble darkhorses like other people collect stamps, yes.
Vegeta probably used every given opportunity to insult everyone around him - if they were below him, or at least roughly the same in rank/powerlevel (see Guldo). I doubt Cui was the only one bearing a crudge against him. And considering the society they lived in - kiss-up, kick-down - one can hardly blame him. (You know what I mean? I'm not sure if I translated that correctly...)

Honestly, if Vegeta's a good example of what the Saiyajin were like it's no surprise that no one seemed to like them. Even the worst monsters have standards, and people like to have someone that they can feel they are better than. The Saiyajin would have been handy goats, because they really were unlikable. If Vegeta's any clue Saiyajin were prone to turning on wounded teammates, liked to eat people, and were insufferably and unjustifiably convinced of their own superiority despite all evidence to the contrary.

"Kiss-up, kick-down" is a wonderful phrase. I'd never heard that one before, but it just fits the situation perfectly.

Well, I don't know... If Bardock is any example, he seemed to genuinely care about his teammates. I think Vegeta simply took being a Saiyajin to the extreme. They all were bad, yes. But Vegeta definitly seemed to be the worst, Imho. Not that I want to complain, of course. I actually like him best when he's as evil as possible. It was his badass decay and the others forgiving him much too easily that pissed me off.

Good. There is a really good German phrase for that, and this was one of the two translations I found. The other one was "above they bow; they kick below".

I am going to use "kiss up, kick down" from now on, because it's an awesome phrase. I guess in American culture, you'd have to use curse words to get a similar feeling. I don't curse, so this expression is perfect for my use!

It's not even a literal translation of the German saying, only the most legitimate translation I could find online. In German instead of "kiss" the phrase "buckeln" is used, which means "to bow", but in a very self degrading, bootlicking manner.

... Just in case you were interested in a more accurate translation. ^^

RyunoOhi In reply to DeadlyChestnut [2010-01-04 23:16:18 +0000 UTC]

There's just something about the word "boot-licking" that just makes a germaphobe like me cringe. I like your translation though, because it sounds more easy to insert into English. We Americans tend to like short quips that are easy to remember/rhyme.

The whole meaning of your term, "buckeln", sounds a lot like Japanese concepts of humbleness to the point of self-depreciation. That's pretty cool in & of itself. English has a lot of words for a lot of things, but sometimes our language lacks that inherent emotive sense that other tongues capture.

I know it's figurative, but still...I remember one time I was playing Truth or Dare with my idiot nephew, & he picked Dare...we were on vacation in a hotel, so I told him to pry the grate off the air vent, & lick it. He did it, too. Ugh..... I know what kind of things infest any given surface of anywhere, so the whole concept of putting tongue to shoe just makes me kinda sick.

I'm a pretty cruel person, huh? To make someone as wimpy as my nephew lick a hotel-grade air vent grate....I'm pretty surprised he even did it. <_
Don't worry about your English - half the time you've got better diction than most Americans I know, & that's the truth. It's kinda sad that in the U.S. people rarely learn to speak their own mother tongue correctly, much less a foreign language. Darn ugly Americans, making the smart ones like me look bad.

DeadlyChestnut In reply to RyunoOhi [2010-01-04 23:35:26 +0000 UTC]

That's figurative speaking, you know that. XD
Well, that translation wasn't done by myself, but okay.

No, that's got nothing to do with humbleness - quite the contrary. That phrase refers to endearing oneself to superiors, for own profit.

And that is exactly the reason why I all too often have problems with expressing myself in English. I know that I get vocabulary and grammar mostly right, but sometimes I just can't say things the way I'd like to because there's no way to transfer my thinking directly into English. It feels like having to take a few to many turns and loop ways until I get to where I want. And even then the outcome is only remotely close to what I actually wanted to say.

Aye, I agree with you that Bardock and his team was probably a better example of what the "average" Saiyajin is like. Once time I read just the best debate between these fans who have obviously just taken sociology, who were just going back and forth about what constituted a healthy society for Saiyajin, and if Vegeta was an example of that or if he was an abnormal sociopath even by Saiyajin standards. I think it's so awesome that people who were arguing about whether Goku could beat up Superman when they were in high school are now having debates about DBZ and in and out group dynamics.

Yup, that's really great. I see it on myself that I have different standarts now that I got back into the series after many years of absence. Of course I do feel weird sometimes, because we're probably thinking deeper into these things than the actual creator of the series... ^^

That reminds me, I need to do actual "real artist" practice drawings, like figure drawing, perspective, etc........oooor I could continue just drawing the weird stuff I usually do.

Right now, I'm drawing skeletons for the first time. I freaking hate skeletons. Too many darn details. Also, I'm drawing... (counting them) ...nine skeletons, plus at least two disembodied skeletal hands. Dang I'm a masochist. No wonder I can't crank out more than one drawing a month. >_
The great thing about you is that you're prolific, but you've also got actual quality in your work.

I just kinda experiment, change drawing styles, & end up spending most of my time scouring the web for references. I spend more god-dang time looking for reference photos, poses, etc. than anything else! I should write a whole Journal ranting about how important good references are.

Oh wait, I hijacked your comments section & said just that. Oops.

DeadlyChestnut In reply to RyunoOhi [2009-12-29 23:10:20 +0000 UTC]

*sigh* I have to force myself to do the practice stuff all to often, too. Doing fanservice makes it easier XD.

I don't think I ever drew a detailed skeleton in my entire life either. And... nine of them? Holy carp!

I still have the feeling that I have to draw much more. Damn procrastination. I feel with you - searching for references certainly is the best way to get distracted. (That and getting myself a XBox for christmas did no help my productivity either...)
But you're right. References are super important. I'm slowly working on drawing the human body solely from imagination, but that's still a long way to go. Also I'm not quite sure if learning by drawing some more or less human looking aliens actually is the right way. XD

Oh, and you just reminded me that I wanted to post a link with great references in the artist's comment section. Where I got most of the poses here from. But as always, I completely forgot about that. >>

RyunoOhi In reply to DeadlyChestnut [2009-12-30 17:19:40 +0000 UTC]

Oh heck yes, I want that link.

Me, I use Posemaniacs & PunchStock.com for most of my more challenging poses. Also, Google image search never hurt. Recently, my mother picked up a cheap used copy of Grey's Anatomy for me, so I'm gonna have to flip through that, too.

As for the skeletons....I'm finally done outlining them, thank you Kami. I actually used a lot of D.A. refs for them, so I basically traced them. This is why half of my Comments section is always Credits to artists & stock photographers. <_👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Finally edited the comments to add that link. Yay. Oh, and thanks for pointing me to puchstock.com. Didn't know that one before. I've been using fotosearch.com alot, which is similiar. And Grey's Anatomy, wow. That's ambitious. o_O

Considering that artists are requiered to study all kinds of different body types... *shrug* I myself am not squicked too easily. ^^

AAAARGH!! Naked Dodoria!! You're cruel T__T
Other than that it's all total eye candy.(yes, even Guldo. Mostly because he is -thank God- still clothed) Cooler is so drool-worthy, I'm afraid my keyboard might short-circuit. And design on Cui's abdomen is very interesting. Once again you've proven your awesomeness by draving even the characters you don't like so well!

DeadlyChestnut In reply to CaptainBrokenTail [2009-12-27 23:16:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes I am. You should know that already.
I'm still glad you like the rest, though. And to be honest, I didn't draw a single character I don't like here. I just called Kiwi/Cui obnoxious because... he is obnoxious? ^^ But I like him, really. :3 Also he was the most interesting to draw.

Oh dear, I can already hear ~Rhandi-Mask fangirling over Burter. Fantastic work, I particularly like Sauza and Guldo for the little glimpses of (I'm presuming) their homeworlds. Very interesting! Happy hols mate!

Thank you! Actually I just painted generic backgrounds, they weren't necessarily meant to be their homeworlds. But it's a nice idea!
