Description
This the building across from my study window, on an overcast day when the clouds parted for a while to allow the sun light the building dramatically. The pole seems to be a lightning rod.I am ambivalent about lightning rods; to me they always seem to dare the gods to strike, a bit of metallic hubris, custom-made for a Greek tragedy.

I think I've had my fair share of "burn your retinas" moments. I had to research female STDs last year, the lynching of Black people by the KKK, the Rwandan genocide, the Cambodian and Vietnamese horrors, the holocaust... It makes you wonder what normal human behaviour is.

Well, normal human behavior, is, erm, normal. It is the contrast of the extremes of cruelty and beauty that boggles the mind. How can the same species create Goldberg Variations kill each other with glee?
