I am not a professional artist, so I do not feel I am qualified to critique this painting. Β However I do think it is an excellent painting of a Native American youth. Β I like you choice of colors too. Β Red, White and Blue. Β How much more American can one get?

THAT IS SO COOL! I wish I could say something professional and constructive sounding, but all I can say is WOAH. Love the title too, there's just not enough respect for Native American People! XD

Well, I'm not a premium member so I can't leave a critique, but I'll leave some critique-like comments anyway.

When I first saw this piece, I think I understood what you were trying to convey straight away. This is such a *classic* drawing, first, let me congratulate you on that. Your devotion to the Disney corporation's style of animation in the "good old days" of the nineties makes me smile... Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite movies, as well as "The Little Mermaid," "The Lion King," "Mulan," oh, I could go on and on.

I am from America, indeed, from the Plain States, where many American Indians have reservations, and I learnt about the horrifying "exterminating" of the Natives. I remember in the fourth grade, our class did a mural about the Trail of Tears. Anyway.

I believe this piece shows both the past glory of the Native Nations, with your illusion of the white abstract around the head of this young man, it reminds me of a chief in full regalia, which is what I thought the picture was, at first. Now that I've looked closer I can feel what seems to be a modern bit of the painting - this picture reminds me of a boy on a reservation, taking part in a ceremony to keep the memory of the "old ways" alive.

His pose suggests pride, in himself and in what he is, which is absolutely the right tone to strike. It's very sad that some American Indians find themselves ashamed of their cultural past, or feel trapped endless political red tape, not being able to move forward or back, stuck in a life that is neither extinct nor common.

The only thing I find "wrong," which is not really wrong but an impression that I got, is the red put about the bottom of your Native's bust. At first sight, it looks rather violent, like blood. I think it would behoove you to perhaps make that color different, still red, but not as blood-red, or a different color all together. Obviously, that's just my opinion.

I give you five for vision, five for originality, four and a half for technique [just that color thing - it's a distraction to the piece that could be made more neutral so the focus on the American Indian doesn't waver], and five for impact. Math was never my thing so I'll let you figure out the average... although I'm pretty sure it's high.

Thank you so much for your contributions to the art world. I can look at your pieces forever...

As a Native, I'm proud to see a piece of artwork like this. Too often kids are taught of "Cowboys and Indians" where the Cowboys are depicted as fearless heroes and the Indians as bloodthirsty savages. Native Americans are a proud, beautiful, culturally rich people no matter the tribe and I can see that in your artwork. Thank you for sharing it.

I don't know if I qualify for giving out critiques (Dammit Jim! I'm a writer, not a artist!)

However, the brilliance of the hues used in this painting is what first caught my eye to stop and click enter...

Upon enlargement, I was pleasantly surprised to see the technique used. Why? Because normally, I'm not really into paintings like this - yet for some reason, both this picture and raw freshness of the strokes really spoke loud to me - enough to make me stop and stare for several minutes.

I don't know the 'correct' terms, but what I 'see' - the raw feathered brush strokes and the smudge of fingers... normally, those things leave me neutral

-- yet, with this piece, the reaction of my imagination told me there wasn't nothing neutral about this piece of art!

You captured a soul on your canvas - not an easy feat! And I have to put this on my favorite page, because this young buck is calling to my writer's mentality to feature him in a story!

Thanks for sharing your time and talent with us - and I wish you much success in future endeavors...

lovee this x

davidkawena In reply to LeahMcGowan-No1 [2010-02-28 19:42:06 +0000 UTC]

No not really. It wasn't based on anything in terms of the Native American aspects, as I didn't want it to be connected to one tribe more then the other, so I didn't look at anything for that.

The face was based of image I found where I really liked the eyes and the frame of the head...

You requested critique and I'm not a premium member, but I'll give it to you, I just wanted to say that he looks a bit more like Rufio from Hook than a Native American.

I'm not saying it's bad, in fact it's awesome, but like, the chin line and the makeup make him look more like a half-breed than an actual N. American. I'm just picky because I come from that background.

Umm, on this one I just used the built-in Photoshop brushes. They have some amazing brushes there that people just don't use, look at the bottom set... You'll find some great things there!

Hey thanks for the reply. I didn't expect them to be the default PS brushes! I ended up deleting most of them, because I'd collected too many. I'll definitely upload them back into PS and take a look. Sometimes the simple brushes are the best it seems. Thanks again.
