Hmm, I suppose making sure you have one light source as a reference for shading would help.
(I'm also learning to do soft shading as well

I do remember hearing lassoing specific parts of the coloring helps as well.
Like selecting the arm so only the soft shading goes on the arm for example.
(I haven't tried it myself yet so maybe look at a speedpaint or smth for a visual example xD)

ahh no, I already do that!! Would recommend! I tend to just use the "clipping group" setting for that, but I think that's just personal preference/paint program.
