Description Medieval Muslim leader. Not an Arab but a Kurd, of course, (as I have been reminded by a zealot of the latter race).

Saladin (Salh ed-Din ibn Ayyub) rose to prominence fighting the Crusaders in Egypt under his uncle Shirkuh, a general sent by Nur ed-Din the ruler of Syria. Saladin became ruler of Egypt, deposing the Fatimid Caliphate. He crossed to Syria and deposed Nur ed-Din's heir, uniting the Muslim Middle East under his rule. He was defeated by the lerous young king of Crusader Jerusalem, Baldwin IV, at Montguissard, but triumphed later at Hattin (1187), beheading the Templar and Hospitallar prisoners subsequently, and taking captive King Guy of Jerusalem and other Frankish leaders. He also beheaded his old nemesis Reynald de Chatillon, who had fought at Montguissard. After this Saladin captured much of the Kingdom of Jerusalem including the Holy City, despite a valliant defence by Balian of Ibelin (who had never been a blacksmith). The people were spared but those who could not pay a ransom were taken as slaves. Subsequently Saladin encountered the Third Crusade under Richard the Lionheart, who defeated Saladin at Acre and Arsuf, but who failed to recapture Jerusalem. The Crusade ended with an uneasy truce. Saladin died soon after and his heirs were evenually usurped by his brother al-Adil.

Saladin wasn't a kurd he was probably an arab or a turk(but more likely and arab)
Plus this guy in the drawing looks like a turk

Amazing!

After reading some of the comments, I just wanted to say that as a Muslim I am extremely proud of Salahudin Al Ayubi. However, religion comes before nationality. I am Kurdish myself, but the fact is Salahudin is a hero to the Muslim Ummah and to non-Muslims as well.

Lets appreciate this great hero, instead of bickering about his nationality.

If every Muslim was like Salahudin then we would not be prejudice to our brothers and sisters of different nationalities and races.

Peace!

Thanks. I've done a coloured version. [link]

I would consider him a great man, and say that humanity comes before either religion or nation.

I did not expect a reply, but thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my comment.

I completely agree with you, I just had to comment after seeing a certain users comments, I needed to point out the fact that he cannot be speaking for all Kurds.

Thank you so much

cool XD i love saladin, he was indeed repected by both sides

they are making an animation in maleysia (muslim) about saladin in 3D

the only downside is that their portraiing the bazantise empire as creeps, and the franks as the main enemies

not sure.... but does this have something to do with the byzantise empire and the franks under karel martel stopping the JIHAD (The muslim crusade) in europe in 700?

XD i agree that the crusades were bad, but the muslims were no better, they did just the same 400 years before the first crusade, and got their asses equally wiped lol shows they have as much a blood thirsty history no more then we do

but like i said, saladin is my fav: many knights in europe mentioned him as an example knight, and he was known as a great knight as well

now if only the muslims could do the same with karel martel and admit they had their own little crusade, we might just get along well

great work as always

Charles Martel stopped Arabs invading France via spain at the battle of Poitiers in around 700. It's unclear to what extent the crusades were a strike-back responding to Islamic encroachments on Christendom. Saladin recaptured Jerusalem in 1187, which had been ruled by the crusaders since 1099. He did not massacre the Christians, but required them to pay a ransom beore being allowed to go free. He took many slaves. He also had all the Templars and Hospitallers executed who were captured at the battle of Hattin.

Notwithstanding the differences in beliefs, the Muslim Saladin was respected by Christian lords, Richard especially. Richard once praised Saladin as a great prince, saying that he was without doubt the greatest and most powerful leader in the Islamic world.[9] Saladin in turn stated that there was not a more honorable Christian lord than Richard. After the treaty, Saladin and Richard sent each other many gifts as tokens of respect, but never met face to face.

In April 1191, a Frankish woman's three month old baby had been stolen from her camp and had been sold on the market. The Franks urged her to approach Saladin herself with her grievance. After Saladin used his own money to buy the child, "he gave it to the mother and she took it; with tears streaming down her face, and hugged it to her breast. The people were watching her and weeping and I (Ibn Shaddad) was standing amongst them. She suckled it for some time and then Saladin ordered a horse to be fetched for her and she went back to camp".

saladin was terrific; the only downside was that he once said that he wanted to pursue the christians to the end of the sea, and rid the world of those who did not believe in islam, but i suppose there are downsides, and it was just only at the beginning of his carreer XD

Nice sketch on the Chivalric Ayyubid Sultan. Among all the muslim commanders, only he was regarded with being a pious chivalric and wise by friend and foe alike. And yes I agree too that Al Din Baybars was a better commander.

Very, very nice. I like the expression; It looks a little like he's both regretful and slightly disgusted, and adds quite a bit of humanity to the picture.

Well, he started quite young. He was a seasoned warrior and ruler of Egypt by the time he was 31.
