Background:
Dash was born in a remote village in central Africa. His father was the village chief. When Dash was 15, his parents sold him to slave traders to save the village (they used the money to pay another, unrelated ransom to a bunch of marauders that were threatening the village). During the slave caravan’s trek through the Arabian Desert, Dash saw an opportunity to escape, and took full advantage of it. He was able to escape successfully, but was unable to help several others make it. For a period of time, Dash wandered eastward, not staying in any one place for too long, until he stumbled across a monastery somewhere in China. They took him in, and taught him to deal with the anger he was feeling over what his parents did, among other things. He stayed there for a good seven years, after which time, he decided to go back home to forgive his parents for what they did. After he said his goodbyes to the friends he made at the monastery, he asked the head monk to point him West, figuring that he could find his way back home given a general direction… The monk pointed him East, instead (unbeknownst to the rest of the monastery, the head monk had no sense of direction).

Dash didn’t find out which way he was heading until a fellow boat passenger told him that the boat was headed to Japan. It was at that particular point that Dash vowed to figure stuff out for himself. With no money to take a boat back, Dash wandered around Japan until he settled in the mountains. For the past two years, Dash has lived in the mountains – fighting bears and wolves for food (hence the tattered clothing) and has even managed to build a small residence out there (with tools and supplies he’d “borrowed” from a nearby village).

Regarding Naomi: [link]
Dash just happened to find Naomi unconscious on a mountain way – just as the wolves were about to get her. Since then, they’ve been good friends. Naomi is always by Dash’s side, and often winds up translating for him. She even modified the gauntlets that he uses to hold his throwing daggers. Strangely enough, he’s told her many times that he likes her figure, but refuses to take her out on a date.

Regarding Oko: [link]
Oko is the person who taught Dash how to make his own clothes. Oko met Dash when he first arrived. While the details of the meeting are sketchy at best, they remain good friends to this day. If it helps Dash, Oko will do it, and Dash shares the same sentiment. Though, he often does wish that Oko and Naomi would quit arguing.

Abilities and Features:
Dash is said to have an interesting ability: the ability to see the truth. Really, it’s just ultra-advanced reasoning. He has a keen eye for detail, a photographic memory, and thoughts like greased lightning. Even his uneducated guesses don’t fall far from their marks. The key to it is in his motto. As he sees it, there is nothing impossible, and everything makes sense as long as some effort is put towards understanding it. He excludes nothing because, as he was taught, the truth is all-inclusive. Dash uses his reasoning abilities for a lot. He’s often able to size up many opponents’ abilities just by looking at them. By taking a look at a weapon, he can tell just how it is to be used, combined with knowledge of an opponent, and he gets a good idea of what they’ll do before they even do it.

Dash is pretty strong. The wolves and bears of the mountains in which he claims residence frequently avoid him, and fight him for food only when absolutely necessary. While he can crack rock if he wishes, he knows that’s an old parlor trick that has little-to-no practical use whatsoever. Dash knows that rocks are static, and have no energy, but that human bodies shift to accommodate blows. Sinew and bones move, targets change position, etc. While at the monastery, Dash was taught these things, and how to use this information to his advantage. As a result, a hit from Dash, even on a “superiorly built” or armored opponent will hurt like the dickens, and the damage will be even greater. Dash is a top-notch hand-to-hand combatant. He uses simple, effective movements, typically employing locks and grabs when he sees fit. When Dash catches the limb of an opponent, he usually breaks it. Dash likes to use the momentum of spins to hit a target, and is pretty good at using the momentum from getting hit (the few times it actually happens) to get in a hit of his own. Strangely enough, Dash will not shy away from high-risk maneuvers if there’s a chance that he will win, but tries to avoid unnecessary risks. He also likes to disarm opponents whenever he can. He’ll sometimes use their weapons against them (just because a man can dish it, doesn’t mean that he can take it), or throw them away. Dash is inhumanly evasive (kind of like Shira, from Blade of the Immortal), ungodly swift, and pays close attention to all five of his senses. He’s even able to fool some opponents into believing that he got hit (usually, he just rolls with it). It should be noted, though, that Dash only has the belt because he found it...

Dash is pretty good with his throwing daggers; able to hit any target within ten meters (even specific points) with disturbing accuracy and precision. A target within fifteen meters only stands a slightly better chance of not getting hit.

Dash is currently the leader and main combatant of Lightning Wolf. It doesn’t mean much, though. He runs it like a commune because he values the opinions of Naomi and Oko. If it the group ever gets more members, he may have to pull rank. Dash’s ideas for the shop are… Creative, to say the least (but no one in their right mind would buy what he wants to sell… “Face Rearrangement Service?” Come on… Though, Oko has reserved the right to vote on that one at a later time… So you never know...).

He’s perfectly capable of making his own clothes, but he prefers the comfort of what he already has. He sewed wolf pelts into the garb that Oko helped him make (it kept him warm while he lived in the mountains).

Dash has a tough time speaking Japanese. The most he’ll say in it is simple sentences (rarely more than four words). This leads most Japanese people to think that he’s either a bit slow, or very quiet and brooding. Fact of the matter is that his native tongue facilitates the speaking of Mandarin a bit better than it does Japanese, and some of the required syllables and sounds are a bit tough for him to say. He does love it when people try to take advantage of him or say something derogatory right in front of him because they think he doesn’t understand the language. Dash shortened his name to make it a little easier for the Japanese to say (it’s the first four letters of his real first name). Interestingly enough, the name “Dash” is also a conglomeration of the first two sounds of his real first and last name (“Da” and “Sh” ). He gets slightly annoyed when the Japanese add the extra syllable to the end, but realizes that nothing can be done, so he leaves it alone.

Personality:
Though Dash may be a hermit (technically, anyway), he’s surprisingly cordial and fun-loving. He has a very strong sense of justice, but he doesn’t put much stock into laws or rules that make no sense. In regards to religion or spirituality, he believes that there’s something out there, and that’s good enough for him. Dash hates to see others suffer, and is loathe to cause undue suffering. He’s often willing to help just about anyone in just about any way he can. Dash believes that there’s value in all life, and that all people are worthy of respect. However, he believes that that respect must be earned. When Dash has a clear goal, he’ll work hard towards it – pouring everything he’s got into it to make sure that he accomplishes it.

Dash often acts as the “ego” of the trio – often trying to find solutions that satisfy both Naomi and Oko. He’ll only take a side if it is something he deems to be really important.

Why SDL?
Dash participates in the SDL to make enough money to get back home so that he can tell his parents that he forgives them, and understands their decision. He’s also up for a good time, if it can be had.

This is an OC I modified for 's SDL (Samurai Dueler's League). The character I modified was Dash Shrapnel SSA version, seen here: [link]

I found out about SDL from ~orochi-jason 's profile for his character. Lately, I've been stressing out, and making characters for the SDL looked like fun, so I said what the heck and did it.

Hopefully, the character will be accepted... May be unranked for a bit, though... At least until I get the hang of grad school next month.

Hey! You're back!

If I can figure out how to make cargo shorts fit into the samurai motif of SDL, they'd definitely go onto this guy... Which would mean that something tragic would happen to Dash's pants as soon as I figure out how to do it... Though denim wasn't officially in use till the 18th century...

It'll take some work, but I think I can figure out how to swing it...
