It should be, as it is the president's official residence!

It's a pretty cool place, though i've been there just for a couple of days, and on weekends it looks like a ghost town, as it is mostly a place where people work! Still a nice place, and seemed very safe to hang out with the camera on your shoulder, something that's not the same on some other parts of brazil. And you definitely need a car to move around, everything is really far from the other. If i recall correctly they're doing some recovery works on alot of buildings so they can be in good shape for the city's 50th anniversary, as you can see quite some degradation goin on.
I do recommend going there, specially for people who love architecture! I'll certainly go there once again sometime!

"something that's not the same on some other parts of brazil"
well yes, that's one of the reasons why I'm hesitating. And I don't speak a word portuguese

It's not an easy language, but i can't really comment on how easy (or not) it is to speak a foreign language amoung the locals as i didn't have that problem.
About the security issues, the truth is that i had none. I've spent like 8 days in Rio and 3 in Brasilia. However i was very careful about how i carried the camera around in Rio, and i do feel that people overwarn you about criminal activities, though, i tend to play safe, specially as Brasil is one of the few places in the world where my camera insurance isn't valid, so you can take your own conclusions from that.
I've been fortunate enough to have travelled to ALOT of places, and in Rio it was the first and only time I felt i really needed to be careful about how i carry my gear. In other places if the camera is not on my shoulder it really is because i'm carrying it on my bag just to give the shoulder some rest.
But as i said in my previous reply, i honestly felt safe in Brasilia, and for instance, even took a ride from some locals, something i wouldn't risk in Rio.

I've heard a lot of scary stories about brazil, but I'm pretty sure I will go there anyway I have a friend living in Rio, I guess I'll just force her to take me around. Thank you a lot for your input.
