Β I've proved my point. I've demonstrated there's no difference between me and everyone else! All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day. You had a bad day once, am I right? I know I am. I can tell. You had a bad day and everything changed. Why else would you dress up like some half-ass Captain Ahab? You had a bad day, and it drove you as crazy as everybody else... Only you won't admit it! You have to keep pretending that life makes sense, that there's some point to all this struggling! God, you make me want to puke. I mean, what is it with you? What made you what you are? Father got killed by the Second Impact? Someone looked at ya funny? Something like that, I bet. Something like that... Something like that happened to me, you know. I... I'm not exactly sure what it was. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice! Ha ha ha! But my point is... My point is, I went crazy. When I saw what a black, awful joke the world was, I went crazy as a coot! I admit it! Why can't you? I mean, you're not unintelligent! You must see the reality of the situation. Do you know how many times we've come close to world war three over a flock of geese on a computer screen? Do you know what triggered the last world war? An argument over how many telegraph poles Germany owed it's war dept creditors! Telegraph poles! Ha ha ha ha HA! It's all a joke! Everything anybody ever valued or struggled for... it's all a monstrous, demented gag! So why can't you see the funny side? Why aren't youΒ laughing?Related content

This already happened, though only for an instant, in End of Evangelion.Β Unfortunately that instant was all it took....
I honestly don't know if the 4th movie will even be made.Β Due to the events of the past two years, I myself am questioning whether mankind as a whole has reached a cultural and developmental dead-end.
Assuming the Rebuild is completed, I'm still pessimistic.Β Shinji has even more reason to be in a comatose state than he did in End of Evangelion.Β He could repeat the line "I want to die.Β The only thing I can do is hurt others, so it's better if I don't do anything" and this time, the audience would be on his side.Β WILLE treating him not as a person, but means to an end, will continue to backfire horribly.Β Assuming he can even regain the ability to function, Shinji is either going to act out of desperation again, or hesitate at a crucial moment because he doesn't trust himself to make decisions anymore.
I actually don't even think the 3rd Impact was Shinji's fault, given his lack of understanding of the EVA.Β Misato may actually take Gendo's place, lamenting blaming others in the end.Β Gendo may be simply become an even greater monster than he was in the manga.Β A clear villain may be the one thing that triggers Shinji into action again.Β It certainly would resonate with today.

i'm staring to think one of the main reasons the final movie has no even been announced is that Hideako Anno realized he ran out of ways of making Shinji's life even more miserable (jokes aside, I actually think he knows he messed up and has no idea what to do with the story).

The sad part is... I could see a way for the story to resolve in a satisfying manner.Β I mean, Misato and the post-time-skip crew have a setup for development.Β There's still nothing known about Mari.Β There is opportunity for some catharsis.
...But I don't see any way that could happen in just one more film....
...Which has me wondering if it will go the Death and Rebirth route and either have a compilation film with added details to retcon in character development; or market two films released (hopefully) in quick succession as a single feature.
I do unfortunately think the films could just be discontinued.Β Given the state of the world, I just have to wonder if Anno cares right now.Β (Note my previous statement that human development has reached a dead end.Β Now... on a personal note: I do want to be optimistic.Β The world-wide activism against fascism is inspiring, in stark contrast to the consequences of historical fascist uprisings of the 30's and 60's.Β Nonetheless, my faith in peaceful democratic government transitions has been deeply shaken.)Β What kind of moral should be given to the world as it is now?Β And will it even be understood?Β (I mean, for all the talk of facing reality, I thought End of Evengelion was hopeless.Β A fascinating look into what breaks a person into becoming a monster, but an exercise in despair, nonetheless.)Β Ahh... I'm rambling again....

Alternate Ending:Β KyubeyΒ appears out of nowhere at the last second and convinces Shinji to sign a contract in order to "fix" the world and avert Second Impact, meaning that he doesn't suffer (yet) and everyone he comes to care about is alive (for now), no one hates him (see where this is going?), no angels (angels, witches, is there any difference?), etc.

HahaShinji: See there were these two kids in a NERV academy. And one night, they decided they didn't like living in this academy anymore. They decide they're going to escape! So, like, they get onto the roof, and there, just across this narrow gap, they see the rooftops of town, stretching away into the moonlight. Stretching away to freedom! Now, the first kid jumps across with no problem. But the other, the other kid daren't make the leap. Y'see... y'see kid 2's afraid of falling. So the first kid has an idea... kid 1 says, "Hey, I have a flashlight with me! I'll shine it across the gap between the buildings. You can walk across the beam and join me!" But the other kid, head shaking, says "Wh-what do you think I am? Crazy? You'd turn it off when I was halfway across!"
