In Sonic 2 for Master System every zone has it's own interactive gimmick (gliders, bubbles, tubes...). This is first zone and it has mine carts, which Sonic can hop into and ride (while riding he can break spikes on his way).
Fun Fact: The game is actually about saving Tails. He can be saved only after collecting all Chaos Emeralds. If you don't collect them all, you'll get a "bad" ending, where it is implied, that Tails died
