Description I had this really ambitious idea for coloring but I've already spent 10 hours on this and I think it looks pretty good considering I didn't use any references (except when I did the line art to tweek the musculature). Two tone cell style coloring ftw. I took advice from and didn't use the airbrush tool, or even the soft round brush, at all! (except for the eyes).

I might come back and add some more details but for now I need a break.

Yeah I know there is no background, sue me

Line art is here : [link]

Have long plotted a fanfic crossing Gargoyles with Predator-imagine a duel between Goliath and one of those beasts!

That's really good! I specially like how well you did his feet since most people seem to have troubles with gargtoes! Good job on legs and all. The wings are the second thing I really like, they look really stretchy, great job

Yeah people do seem to have problems with the feet, but I have a thing for feet so I *had* to get them right

Thanks so much for the comment!

I always have trouble making wings look alright when it's not from a side angle, I was thinking they should be foreshortened but that didn't come across quite as well as I wanted.

Kewl! From the thumbnail, I didn't know if this was digital or done with markers. I think this piece is a lot more successful visually than your airbrushed images, mostly because this one has a bit of style and particularly because it has your style. I could see you working in bits of gradient and half-transparent shadows, particularly in the reflected light areas, to push the form and sense of light.

How do you feel about this image? Obviously you had bigger plans (from your artist comments) but are you happy with the way it's turned out?

Btw, have you thought about trying vector?

what's vector?

I'm happy with it but I originally was going to use more than two tones for coloring, I usually try to use 3-5 when I color with marker, so two is pretty unusual for me, the coloring you see here was just going to be layer one of three, but it took so long as it was I decided to go ahead upload. Anyways, your advice was good! I'll definitely try it this way in the future, maybe with more layers next time.

I wouldn't have asked if I did! Remember I'm an amatuer, self taught unless you count highschool art.

Vector uses math to save the image you make so it's scalable to any size. Most images are pixel-based, so they have a defined size and look uber fuzzy when blown up. But what's important about vector is it's great for logos or digital images that use a lot of flat shapes with sharp edges. You can do gradiencies; I think they work similarly to the gradiency tool in Photoshop, like in that one tutorial I linked you way back. You can use Photoshop to do vector images (using the pen tool) but Illustrator is focused on vector images so I think it has more tools for vector artists. One artist that I really like that uses vector is , and is a high profile artist that uses photographs to do highly realistic vectors. I think vector art is super cool, but I don't think it would work with my style. Maybe it would work for you though.

wow, that sounds really complicated. There is a digital imaging class being offered at the college nearby I've been thinking maybe I should take a class, all this digital stuff is so much to learn ><

dierat In reply to Darksavvy [2009-02-17 21:04:46 +0000 UTC]

Sounds cool, I wonder what they teach you. Do you know what programs they cover?

I know, sometimes it feels like your brain's getting smushed, huh? I haven't done any vectoring so it looks complicated to me but it's probably really simple once you've done it once or twice. Just like using Photoshop. I just know it uses anchor points (little dots), so if you want to make a square you have 4 anchors (the corners), and the more anchors you use in a shape, the more round you can make it until it's a smooth circle. To change the shape, move the anchors. At least that's how I think it works

ART 192 ROP---INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL IMAGING

"Designed for graphic artists and photographers. Covers basic instruction in the electronic operation of photographic imagery, composites, and collages. Instruction will include basic training on Macintosh computers using Adobe Photoshop software, film and flatbed scanners, black and white, and color printers."

That description is pretty crap but it was one of the only art classes I could find that teaches photoshop. I'm thinking I need to stop by the advisory office and ask them what they think would best suit my needs.

It sounds to me like it's more about how to edit photos and put them together than using Photoshop for digital painting/drawing. You should definitely ask if you can get a more specific description of what the class will cover.

Darksavvy In reply to dierat [2009-02-18 22:59:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I'll have to find out. It seems to me that if the college is offering classes on something as simple as excell and microsoft word they should offer a class on photoshop. Maybe they do though under non acredited courses, whoever laid out there website did a crummy job cause I can't seem to find any useful information, which is why I need to just stop by and ask.
