Description

So that was it. She couldn’t believe how straightforward it had been. This unbelievably bright and painful image of him, of Jack, of her… They were a team. Had been for five years. A team. He’d made that clear from scratch. ‘You’re Hailee, I’m Jack, and together we can beat the world. It’s just a matter of sticking together.’ And that world had been quite ugly and hard and treacherous. And Jack had stood by her, patiently teaching her and marveling every single day at how blessed he had been to find her. And she had been strong and resourceful enough to stand by him too, to the bitter end. He was so proud of her, he had whispered that much before… before he left.

The screen was blank now. And Hailee was on her own. After his last sigh, she waited, refusing to believe it was over. But it was. For good. Then she went wild, wailing and howling and destroying everything in sight until the anger at the unfairness of it all finally receded, and she squatted down next to the old sofa, sobbing uncontrollably.

And when that was over, she did what Jack had told her to do. Packed her few belongings and whatever food she could get into her small bag, checked the gun and ammo that were hers now – he had been so amazed at how fast she was learning to use it while…while there was still time – and she was all set. Ready to hit the road and head north, like they had agreed she would.

Almost ready…

'almost ready'...
So I wonder what is missing and I'm really curious to find out.

Seriously cool, "From great tragedy arise great heroes". . .

Wonderful scene composition and cooperative storytelling, fantastic!

This reminds me of something I had to deal with in the real world a long while back, which obviously had nothing to do with post-apocalyptic settings.

You seem to be telling us that Hailee pulled herself together, yet her pose, overall sentiment, as well as that ”Almost ready…” in the end of the narrative, leads to believe differently. Looking forward to finding out what’s next.

You are very welcome, John!
As you know, I prefer stories where things are left vague and not everything is black or white.

A great picture really: her pose, her sorrow. the cartidges, the gun, the litter, the pork and beans... and story. A little heartbreaking though Nice reading.
