Description "You folks are like sheep among wolves...tell me! Where is your shepherd?"

-----------

In order to travel in Dark Country, one needs a heat source- those who do travel must carry around torches to withstand the cold weather. Most folks travel together, but there are those who have enough bravery to travel alone.

(The thick line art isn't going away if y'all were wondering- I'm experimenting with all sizes and weights of lines and I might settle for a medium between thin and thick lines. I'm also working on backgrounds- I made plenty of mistakes here that will be avoided later, but critiques are still always welcome.)

Thanks so much!! Lighting has actually been my weak spot for quite a while, but I'm glad to know it's getting better.

Thanks, partner! And heh, that's funny because the cloth actually wasn't sooty when I drew this until my brother reminded me that it should be.
I guess I didn't make it toooo black because it's lit up by the fire, but I'll definitely consider making the burns darker next time- thank you!!

Hello there !

Colour :
The color choice is very nice. I like how you went with using shades only ranging from the reddish to yellowish color palette as the colours look quite harmonious.
Though the colour palette is harmonious when choosing only a certain range of colours, it can have the tendency to make the piece look quite dull. A suggestion for this would be to incorporate blue by using it in your shadows so it doesn't overpower the piece but at the same time make it look interesting.

Concept :
Really interesting concept! Is he looking for something but cannot find it? Is he hiding from someone?... yep I read the description just now and it matches pretty well with the illustration so nice job!
Tbh there's not much I could give for improvement here as it is already pretty good but you could try add elements into the background like rocks protruding, rubble or animals like bats hanging up to make it more interesting.

Construction :
The lighting is pretty good and creates a dramatic atmosphere. The flame is also very nice with its wisps and texture.
A suggestion I could give is to try change the color of the lineart. Using a single colour lineart isn't bad but it might be worth it to try experimenting with changes in lineart color to make it look more harmonious.  As for the shading, it's pretty good but there are still some areas that could be improved on such as the shading on his coat. Even in darkness, some light could rebound off the walls. It's quite hard to explain but it's something you could notice with reference.

us.123rf.com/450wm/Andreus/And…

There never really is an area that is completely dark unless it is far off in the distance or completely covered from the light.

All in all though, amazing work and I hope you keep it up!

Hey there!
Thank you so much for the critique- I like how you bulleted all the elements I grasped and the elements I could improve on. Thanks for the reference photo, by the way- believe it or not, I find it hard to find good references sometimes, heh.
I'll actually try changing the color of my line art very soon! Thanks so much, and happy New Year!

This picture I just really, really, like! I mean, it just looks so cool! I honestly don’t get the impression that this guy is wicked, though. I do enjoy the little story you supplied this picture with. You start off with a line where someone is asking where the group leader is, and then you bring up a description of what sumarizes the Dark Country to a degree. It’s interesting that the only way to stay warm on their journeys through this land is for everyone to equip a torch, with the bravest having the option to go alone. I get Indiana Jones thoughts and vibes from this picture! Also, if this is the Dark Country, is it all underground, or is only this part underground? And if a torch is needed to stay warm in the caves, then why is it cold down there?

Hey there! First off, I'm really glad you like it, thanks!!!

Oh, and you'll definitely see more of this guy- 'The Wicked' is more of an epithet, just like how I called the Rhinestone Sheriff 'The Righteous'

darkcountry.deviantart.com/art…

So yeah, you'll soon find out why this guy is so evil, mwahaha.

Those are some excellent questions, by the way!

"Dark Country" is more of a planet than a land. It's very similar to earth in size and it once had the same structure, wildlife, population, etc. and even exists in a galaxy close to the Milky Way, but one day, it spun out of orbit away from its sun. It then became a dark, frozen wasteland and most of the people and wildlife died away.

Temperatures can reach subzero degrees Fahrenheit, so people try to stay inside or within civilization.

Speaking of which, my illustrations focus on two nations:

darkcountry.deviantart.com/art…

That's only a speck of the entire planet, though. Since the stories and characters center around the 19th century, and no one is brave enough to go exploring, the map is just a small piece of a huge puzzle.

That's kind of a condensed explanation, though. I'm typing up an info journal explaining the lore of Dark Country, the tale of New Galveston and Esperanza, what this account is for, how you can get involved, etc. so if you would like to know more, be sure to stick around and find out!!

Do ask questions if you have any!

Also, if you’re wondering why I’m reposting this message, it’s because I have a picture I’m trying to submit to the ProjectComment gallery, but I didn’t have enough words. You say that this guy is evil, and yet, your avatar depicts him as a nice guy. Looks can be deceiving indeed. I can’t wait to learn more about this Earth-like world that has spun out of orbit and becoming a dark, frozen wasteland! I also like how—in a sense—fits perfectly with your comment and the signature that you have! It is all so very nice and well thought! This style of yours makes this picture appear as though it was from an animated television show that you’ve made! I can just see this being turned into an animated series. I’m definitely going to check out the rest of your gallery after this, because I am intrigued about everything, from the characters, to the world itself!

Haha, it's alright, and oh goodness, I'm glad!! I've been experimenting with all sorts of line art and coloring techniques, and I might use this style for creating fake screenshots.  Thanks for checking out my gallery, by the way- I haven't been on this account for that long so there's not much in it, but it'll definitely fill up with much better art in no time.  I'll also put up that info journal soon, and I'll post a mini-comic later in the week.

I actually thought of creating an animated series but realized that it would require tons of voice actors, a music score, and most importantly, lots of time. I do, however, have an empty YouTube channel and I'm currently working on some animatics! Maybe when I'm a bit older and I have more free time and if this project gets more recognition, an animated series can happen.

Once again, I am so glad that you're interested- if you would like to see more, feel free to stick around! More will be revealed.

Heh, well my older artwork used really thick lines but I'm branching out and experimenting with thinner ones! For now, my drawings may look like this one but that doesn't mean I won't go back to the thicker lines.
