Aloren still couldn’t sleep. The sense of dread that distracted her during training with Talia two days ago had only gotten worse. She hadn’t slept more than a wink since that time. Part of her was grateful that Talia did not have time to visit her while she was so disturbed. Paradoxically, her meditation rituals had only made things worse. Normally exercises, soothing aromas, and daily maintenance of her home allowed her mind to wander and pierce the veil of her subconscious fears. Instead, the deeper she probed into the shadows the blacker they got until they surrounded her and closed in around her. Something dark approached, it might even have been there already, and all Aloren knew is that destruction trailed close behind.
