I so love this photo. It does capture the emotion of fear so well. Which in my opinion is difficult to do with objects with no feeling.
It's like I'm there, I don't want to walk up those stairs, but I feel compelled to. I know the result will not be in my favor, but I can't turn around...

It's a good example of the photographer's direct effect on the photograph. If you feel nothing in regards to your subject, you'll struggle to portray any sort of emotion or concept. I personally have a sense of fear and trepidation tied to this particular set of stairs, and I believe that's why I'm able to effectively portray that emotion.
