+ Gentle | Fatherly | Vigilant | Noble | Patriotic

Despite his large and burly appearance, Sullivan is a soft-spoken man who takes joy in living the simple family life, and even the way he handles things around him he does with utmost gentleness after accidentally breaking things too many times due to his size. His soft-spokenness though comes with a natural timidness. He’s not someone who enjoys socializing with big groups (especially with people outside of his business and family), and being as traditional as a Valski can be, he can find it difficult to do or make certain decisions and try something new as he thinks it might upset the gods and other spiritual beings somehow.
On the field however, Sullivan becomes an almost different man as if battle can awaken a hidden part of himself. He can be classified as a stone-faced rigid fighter who faces battles head on, and he can draw forth a loud booming voice that challenges all foes who try to get in his or comrades' way, all for the sake of protecting those around him by drawing attention to himself.
Though it's not in his nature to brutally kill things just yet, or his lack of skill does hinder him from being a completely effective fighter, there clearly lies a soul of a warrior buried deep within he is currently striving to draw out, all to bring honor to his family name and show his utmost loyalty to his homeland.
History:
Sullivan was raised by his uncle and aunt as his mother died in childbirth, and his father, a former Helvarg, died on duty when Sullivan was still an infant. Though his relatives were appropriate guardians and brought him up with strong Valski values and morals, the stories they told of his parents built a void in Sullivan that felt like only his true parents could fill, and this affected him later in life when he married his childhood sweetheart and settled down to have a family of his own.
Though his size and natural strength made him look like a perfect warrior, and people expected him to follow his father and join the Helvarg, he refused to repeat what cost his father’s life and disappear before knowing his children, so he instead took on a simple life working as a woodsman to have a more active role in raising them. Though this would draw negative comments from others out of pure disappointment in his wasted potential, Sullivan never minded them as he was doing this for a greater purpose.
Unfortunately, the couple were married for 20 years and not once had a child. This further built tension around them; although he was a respectable man, people couldn’t help but see him as a waste and poor excuse of a husband. Things would escalate the day the Empire invaded Valsk. Sullivan’s wife evacuated on time, but circumstances left him behind, and the frustrations and ire of the past years finally took over, forcing him to battle for once in his life as something inside him awakened to his rage. Since he was only just a woodsman however, he was instantly captured and made into a prisoner of war.
While in prison, Sullivan began to think over and believe the negative comments people gave him through the years. It especially ate him up inside when he had to watch his brethren suffering, and he could do nothing to help. He'd turn to prayer in desperation, pleading for a chance that he may set things right for himself and others, and eventually Sullivan got his chance.
Over time, guards became unwary of his presence since he was extremely cooperative and silent. If he did speak, it was for very friendly (though timid) small talk, even with soldiers. Thanks to this, Sully learned the guard schedules and duties through observation and silent message passing among 3 prisoner friends without arousing suspicion. It would take months of quiet preparation before the 4 finally orchestrated a plan late at night and deep into winter with each person taking designated roles to ensure their escape. Things would not go off without a hitch however.
One of them sacrificed their self to distract some guards, and another was shot by a sniper when the group actually reached the outside snow. The weather also became difficult to bear for Kobeners, so even if the two of them got far enough for their captors to give up, it seemed like they would die to the cold instead. The other prisoner succumbed as expected, but being a Valski woodsman for most his life thankfully made the weather seem just bearable enough for Sullivan. After weeks of surviving through Fulwyt forest in camouflage skinned from a bear's carcass, he blindly yet miraculously sneaked his way into Belport and stowed away on a boat which, after a few detours, landed in Amedra.
Having never left the north before, he was a lost man in the new city, though again by chance a magical tailor came across him and gladly took him in exchange for physical labor. Sullivan worked for him the next while, though his stay eventually came with questions from his boss. He’d admit his story up until that point alongside his worry over his wife’s well-being to Lazaruz, and taking pity on the man, the tailor sent letters in Sullivan’s stead to Valevo, knowing this was where most Belport and Valsk refugees were at. They got a letter back, and much to Sullivan’s relief it came from his wife. After a few more exchanges of letters, the tailor funded Sullivan’s travels to Valevo where he happily reunited with her.
There the two settled back into their usual lives, yet Sullivan constantly thought over the promises he offered to his patrons and the luck that brought him there. A month after reuniting with his wife, he too was suddenly greeted with the news that she was finally pregnant. Although he was happy that after all these years, he could finally have his family, it frustrated him to know that they never could see or grow in their homeland as long as it was under the Empire. After several days of discussions with his wife and thinking things over, Sullivan finally put away his fears and decided: he was going to fight for Valsk’s liberation and reclaim his honor after neglected doing so for so long. Since then he began training for inevitable battles, and when the kingdom made plans to reclaim the north several months later, he signed up instantly. He said goodbye to his wife once more, and after a few grueling days of battle on the snowy mountainside, Sullivan survived and saw for himself Valsk’s reclamation.
When news spread that everyone could finally go home, Sullivan too learned that his wife gave birth in Valevo. When the family reunited in Valsk, he finally met his son for the first time, and somewhere inside he could feel that there was perhaps hope for him in being a father, a husband and a warrior at the same time. Though the family has since settled back into their homes and are living the life they have always wanted, Sullivan too currently trains hard everyday even as he works so that he may finally join the Helvarg like his father before.
Relationships:
Cristen Bardwell - Childhood sweetheart and doting wife. She’s notably way more talkative and open than her husband, so some people sort of question what she saw in the giant timid man. The woman has been very accepting of Sully and his decisions since they were children, regardless of what relatives and others seem to think of him.
Kamilo Bardwell - Sullivan's first and only son, born in Valevo at the height of Valsk's retribution, 28th of Rains. Quite the happy bouncing baby with a smile that can quickly melt away any of Sully's worries. After having waited for him for more than 20 years, the boy means the world to his parents, and Sullivan will do anything for him to live a happy life.
Mishka - Loyal family Askelhund and daughter of Sully's first Askelhund. She mostly helps Sullivan when it comes to his woodcutting businesses.
Alphonse, Freydis and Erik [all deceased] - The Belporter and 2 Valskis whom Sullivan became friends and worked with in order to escape prison. Freydis died distracting the guards; Erik was shot as soon as he saw freedom, and Alphonse died to the cold while leading the way to Belport. Since coming back to Valsk, Sully made sure to set up a small memorial for the three near home to thank them for everything they did to get him to this point.
Lazaruz Calisto - The Amedran Tailor who took him in and offered him funding and other necessities in exchange for work. An overall nice and pleasant individual if not a bit too business oriented for him to understand sometimes.
Additional info:
- Most common comment he got growing up was that he was the spitting image of his father but had the personality of his mother. Little did everyone know how much that comment would ironically shape him and his choices.
- When Sullivan took his leave from Lazaruz' shop for Valevo, the tailor notably gave him a free dress for his wife and a "special" shirt he didn't say much about (other than he should think about wearing it when he feels he might get into trouble) as parting gifts. It was during the retribution of Valsk he learns from Lazaruz that he gave him one of his battle enchanted prototype clothing articles, and after refining the enchantments with the Tailor, he makes sure to wear it to battles even until now. He has absolutely no idea how the magic works on the clothing and questions if it’s actually all just in his head however. ((The fabric is actually just strengthened enough to act like lightweight chain mail against blades))
- Partially due to being a woodsman, Sullivan prefers using an assortment of axes for fighting though seems to favor the lighter types, especially single handed throwing ones. He will occasionally have a self-crafted shield strapped to his back in case he finds it difficult to re-equip a thrown axe or if he needs minor extra defense.
- His son’s name was a suggestion from a Cantish woman who assisted his mother during his birth, hence it’s oddly un-Valsk sounding name. Thankfully both Sully and Cristen find it fitting since he was born outside of Valsk anyway.
- Ironically Sullivan's first name is quite an un-Valsk sounding too, which is why most often people prefer to call him by his nickname. He was named after one of his father's closest friends hailing from another city.
- Sullivan still keeps the bear pelt he skinned and used as camouflage on his way to Belport.
- Technology and magic confuse him so much. He’d much rather stick to the old fashion way of doing things than understand these newfangled contraptions.
- Speaks Common and Valski.
- Being as traditional as a Valski can be, Sully finds it difficult to trust elves and is generally uncomfortable around them. Seeing a dark elf for the first time during the Storming of the North naturally terrified him.
