That's not really true as the Meteor actually had quite a long career, serving the RAF from 1944 well into the 1980s, ending the career as target tugs. Even today Meteors still find themselves useful to the military, not in active service with any air arms, but as flying ejection seat testing platforms for Martin Baker. Two examples still fly doing that job.

That's a beautiful shot of the meteor...I do sometimes wonder whether any of them were shot down during the closing years of WW2, or whether they were able to outrun everything with those jet engines...A magnificent aircraft and great shot too!
