What I meant was in the comments.
Ex:
LOB: Now let's MARCH, My loyal warforged!

Not like a separate deviation work but, if I do, I will.

I use a lot of different techniques - it depends mostly on the piece itself and how I've gotten into a groove with a certain set of pieces. Sorry to be ambiguous, but I kind of work all over the place.

This picture does a great job capturing the character of the Lord of Blades. I love the coloring on it, and the details on LoB's design. So lovely (if that is the word one ought to use when discussing a homicidal robot.)

Oh, they like to call themselves lovely too, just like everyone else. Evil people are just like the rest of us. They just want to be pretty. So pretty.

Wow--amazing what you can find on DeviantArt.

This picture is *incredible*. It is exactly the kind of illustration that brings a character to life. Back in the older edition's Eberron books, I thought the Lord of Blades was serviceable, but lackluster. This picture comes along, and suddenly I find myself calling him one of my favorite D&D villains. You can never underestimate how far a seemingly simple picture concept can go!

How is it one gets to doing these kinds of things for a company such as this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dangercook In reply to Caetis [2009-08-04 01:39:56 +0000 UTC]

Very very carefully It seriously takes a long amount of time, dedication practice and commitment to living on bare minimum at times. I'm in no way tooting my own horn - it's just the life of the freelance illustrator. If you're really serious about heading that direction, start checking out your competition, looking up every tutorial you can find by people in the industry, reading interviews about how people got their first jobs, etc. It would help greatly if you did what I did and found a mentor to guide you through the beginning stages. Someone in your neck o' the woods who's in the industry. Oh, and start getting involved in your local art community. It's all about connections. . .

Caetis In reply to dangercook [2009-08-04 04:09:00 +0000 UTC]

Well that I do appreciate, and I'll look into it. Finding someone nearby isn't always as easy as it seems, and trust me, I'm living about as minimal as I can right now. Still, I'll have to go find a way I suppose.
I do appreciate the response, and the advice. Very kind of you.

Believe me, I grew up in a town with a population of only a few hundred people, so I know how difficult finding someone nearby is. At a convention in Seattle, an art director for Dark Horse comics gave me some of the best, and most blunt advice, I've ever received. "You have to mold your life to this job in order to compete, because I can guarantee it won't work around your schedule." It's very true. So if you have to move to get somewhere with a larger artistic community, that's what you have to do. I was mostly attempting to jot put down the big items I could think of. There are a lot of places on the internet to get more detail-specific info on freelancing as an illustrator. Lots of freelance blogs.

After deciding which area(s) of the market you want to enter (i.e. concept design, character art, storyboarding, illustration, etc.), check out who's getting the most work from your target companies in that / those specific area(s). Constantly look through art annuals, such as Spectrum, and try and observe what elements each featured artist brings to the table. Focus on employing the features other artists are bringing to the table, such as perspective, lighting, palette, etc., within your own style. In Spectrum you can see which art directors commissioned specific pieces and that can give you a direction to start digging for contact info. Try and submit artwork of similar tone and caliber to what you've observed being commissioned in the art annuals. This will start getting you attention.

Most likely, if your progress is like mine, when you do start working for your target companies you'll start out at the bottom of the totem pole. It can take several years to work your way into the projects you truly want to work on. Be patient, and very diligent.

I very much appreciate that advice coming my way. In truth, we likely know a few of the same folks, as we reside in the same town. I found you through Ms. Tracy's favorites there, and was impressed with your work, though I hadn't expected you'd have been so helpful to this point, and I am grateful.
I will work much harder towards getting to be good enough to try this out, as I've never really felt I was. I still have some issues with Lighting I'm working around, and likely, there are some other spots that needs help as well. I'll go grab some more books, and see where I can go from there.
And again, I do thank you!
