This page is born of some fears of mine that I was becoming too "genre." Think Dan Schkade just draws the crime noir superhero fare? Bam! I go all haunted longhorn on your ass.I mean, here's the climax of my first full Fowl story: [link] . But for the following two years or so, I've been doing mostly gangster stuff. That supernatural element was always kind of there, but it was almost like I was apologizing for it. The crime/mystery element is essential to the Parris City stories, but so is the horror/fantasy. I forgot that, for some dumb reason. Any super schmo can fight wiseguys! With this story (as well as the short story you can find in the fall issue of Mysterious Adventure Magazine [link] ), I'm taking the Fowl back to the kind of paranormal criminality only he can fight, 'cause he's the only one with the psychology for it. "Blow me, forces of madness! I'm crazy already!"
The Hellblazer stuff is more fun to draw than the Goodfellas stuff, anyway.*

Funny you should put the 'He's crazy already' comment in your um... comments box - I was thinking that already from the dialogue - the way he laughs at his own little aliterative joke as he's prying the lid off that coffin - his persona is kind of a coping strategy for the madness around him isn't it! Art is top notch of course, but that goes without saying! I like the polaroid shots following his focus in the room.
The cow is just weird though.

As for the crazy comment, you're partially right: he's not a raving loony. After, the whole point of being the Fowl is to control his illness. What I mean by "crazy already" is that his mind, once shattered, is now uniquely suited to handle the extraordinary. He can process the insanity, because he's been there himself. He's not cured at all, but he is able to use his abnormal psychology to his advantage.

I understand entirely what you mean (save I wsrite more than draw). Sometimes you can rejuvenate your love of something by just breaking away from old habits and playing around with quirky ideas etc.
