Being an actual self-taught artist I will tell you this:
Self-taught isn't without reference.
Self-taught means you didn't hire somebody to teach you to draw.

Like Corvinore is saying (I think), how could you teach yourself, with no exposure to any other material, like references, etc? I suppose it depends on what extent 'self-taught' is to some people, but to me, 'self-taught' implies learning without any exposure to reference material, influences and such, and I don't believe that's possible. You need something else to learn from, surely, is what I'm thinking.

If I could get into a digital art class... but I can't so I have to learn from others tutorials :/ Self taught but absolutely not better than the ones that go to classes

In all honesty I'm not sure I feel there is such thing as self-taught; whether it be tutorials, art classes, looking at other artists/styles for reference, looking at photos for anatomy references, everyone learns to draw and improve their art from from somewhere , I think. I don't think one can learn all of these kinds of things solely by themselves and themselves only. I also think that being 'self-taught' doesn't make an artist any better or worse than any student of an art school or something similar.

Reminds me of a little philosophical banter I read last year between Socratese I think and can't quite remember the other...though they talked of if people were kept in the dark and could only see a small light on a wall to watch the shadows of other people carrying objects. The question was that if the people were to one day emerge into the light, would they be able to recognize the objects and all that? Not entirely relevant but to an extent it has some relation to how us artists learn.

I figure looking at and using tutorials or asking others how they draw revokes the self teaching label so yeeeah not many self teachers out there IMO. We are all inspired/play off each others art, this ain't all you man humble yourself. D< I like the stamp since I"m assuming the author comment is sarcastic.

This is exactly what I think too. You can't learn solely by yourself; surely they referenced other photos, drawings/ had artistic influences and such. We all learn from something is what I believe.
