Description This is a picture I took of a Thunderbolt 1003T model air raid siren in Olney, TX that is currently operated to warn citizens of impending tornadoes. This is the all time classic civil war era siren that warns thousands of residents across tornado alley. This, along with newer siren models can be found all across North Central TX, as well as the Panhandle of TX. Amazingly, Dallas county owns and maintains 90+ tornado sirens! More pics to come.

These used to be all over my area. Now they have been replacd with t-128s. Which I also like, but the T-bolt will always be my favorite.

Dallas has a shitload of these, but aside from the one at fire station 9, they're all silent.
Wichita has quite few, slowly being replaced by ATIs

Another very nice siren you got photographed. And maintaining 90+ sirens is nothing compared to our neighboring town that has 160 warning sirens.

Dallasite here. Want to clarify.
Dallas COUNTY owns NO SIRENS. All the sirens in the county are City owned.
Also, Dallas proper in and of itself has 160+, not 90+.

I live in Central Ohio...in a small town of Newark. We have nine sirens...but Columbus is a BIG area and they have to cover large areas

Wait a minute...
Thunderbolt 1000, 1000T, 1003, 1003T!?
Is there a such thing as a 1003T or you accidently add a T at the end of the word "1003"?

Dameon666 In reply to Angelcuti [2008-12-25 21:04:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, I originally had it labeled as a 1000T. But then somebody came along and told me it was a 1003T and explained the differences to which I'm not quite brushed up on. Honestly, I know it's a Thunderbolt...I'm just not sure what kind of Thunderbolt it is.

Oh, I see someone already answered your question. Hehe. Still, nice picture. I still have yet to see a 1003 in person. >_>

This model has the Hi Lo/Fire alert signal on it. Those boxes on either side of the horn, they contain 'chopper solinoids' that modulate the pitch of the siren. There's a few YouTube vids that show how it work.

Wow! That's pretty awesome. So you can identify this as a 1003 based on the two chopper solinoids on either side based on the box design? That's good to know.

It's actually a 1003. It's also a very rare one, with, the offset rotator, too. Nice picture.

The rectangular box shaped device where the horn is attached. That's the solenoid valve covering, so, the siren can perform more functions than a 1000T can. Great pic, btw.

I swear, the ACA Hurricanes made the creepiest sound of all of them, but it was still cool.

Well I learn something everyday. Thanks. You know, when I was living in the Dallas and Garland area, we had a lot of ACA Hurricanes and Thunderbolts...but I believe they have updated their siren system in Dallas county and the rest of North TX with better and much louder sirens that ge to around 130+ dB. Awesome! I'm partial to the Omnidrctional Modulater myself.
