Description Sato remained distant as usual. He didn't speak much and Masaru could only guess to what went on in his mind. He looked tired, his eyes dark without the typical glow of his aura. He seemed small, fragile, hidden in that oversized coat of his. But he did that mission all his own.
"So" Masaru was the first one to break the silence. "Since when did you grow up so much?"
"Since it's needed" Sato replied.
A reaction that surprised Masaru. "I thought Neorasa was just a game to you?"
"It was" Sato admitted. "Until that last mission happened"
"Oh?"
"They dragged an innocent girl into this."
"And since when do you care about innocent girls?"
Sato never cared. It was for a good reason he had the kind of reputation that he had. Masaru had grown wiser than to openly comment on his actions. Sato was an esper. He usually just did as he pleased, regardless of Masaru's disapproval.
"You want to know what happened?" Sato didn't wait for an answer as he lifted his face. "They picked her up from that university, locked her up and raped her." Sato's eyes wandered off to the window again. "Those assholes crossed a line this time."
Masaru turned his eyes towards the front window. Apparently he was not the only one who kept secrets. Nobody mentioned those details when they told him about what happened. Did they do that on purpose? To not make him feel bad for losing his consciousness? Or was it that they didn't know?
"How--" Masaru hesitated. "Did she tell you?"
"I got her out of there," Sato said. "Destroyed those men. What did you expect?" His voice sounded unsteady as he let out a sigh. "It's not always fun if you can hear people's thoughts directly, you know?"

Well, I guess that is realistic...not anybody can be Proffesor X and imagine, for example, hearing your least favourite politician thinking, or worse, seemingly normal person thinking about something really bad (ad Unbreakable with B.Willis)

ErlenmeyerKat [2018-06-05 11:01:47 +0000 UTC]

Aww it isn't Lucy, is it? Poor Sato.
And I can hear Masaru realizing he's going to have to start dealing with Sato and girls. The image fits well for a tough conversation in the car! And great water drop effects on the window.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DamaiMikaz In reply to ErlenmeyerKat [2018-06-05 12:13:44 +0000 UTC]

Nope, not Lucy. It was the daughter of one of Neorasa's major intelligence officers. She didn't have anything to do with the rebels (she didn't live with her dad either) so that makes it even more of a cruel action.
Oh... and there isn't much to 'deal' with Sato and girls. The boy grew up in a warzone and has probably seen shit Masaru can't even begin to imagine, so he usually hold himself pretty well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErlenmeyerKat In reply to DamaiMikaz [2018-06-05 17:40:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm just thinking that when individuals start noticing others in different ways, their priorities, ways of thinking, confidence, motivations, really everything becomes a bit unpredictable until things settle once more. Warzone or not, if Sato had fairly non-sexual tendencies and that shifts, everyone is a biological creature and physiology plays a part even in mental interpretation of the world. The most neutral individual can be a crabass if they have a migraine. The most disciplined can make a poor choice if an attractive individual asks (or they are perceived as needing) it. And Masaru's questions hinted to me that he perceived a potential shift in Sato's decision making.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DamaiMikaz In reply to ErlenmeyerKat [2018-06-05 18:12:59 +0000 UTC]

You're true about physiology playing a role in people's reaction. It's quite complex and one of the major factors in the stories that high level espers are known to be different from normal people in this aspect, although science still has to find out exactly how different they are.
Sato is known to be rather indifferent since the beginning when he and Masaru meets, though it always remains the question whether this is because of his powers or the forced medication that he was subjected to (and that most certainly was of influence). Masaru notices the shift, yeah. He has noticing for a while, but he isn't too bothered by it. In fact he prefers the more human version of Sato over the cold one.

ErlenmeyerKat In reply to DamaiMikaz [2018-06-05 18:46:43 +0000 UTC]

I would prefer it, too! Sato can be pretty vicious.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DamaiMikaz In reply to ErlenmeyerKat [2018-06-05 20:18:09 +0000 UTC]

It's a double edged sword.
The old version of Sato is dangerous, but very close to true neutral. Don't bother with it and it won't bother with you. The more emotional version will have mercy and save his allies, but is also capable of a lot more anger

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ErlenmeyerKat In reply to DamaiMikaz [2018-06-06 00:12:37 +0000 UTC]

The trials and tribulations of espers hitting puberty (I'm assuming it's slow just like their aging). Poor things.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DamaiMikaz In reply to ErlenmeyerKat [2018-06-06 04:44:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh... Espers hit puberty at a normal age. It's just that puberty doesn't only include bodily changes but also changes in their powers. Powers don't fully complete/stabilize until adulthood. This is why adult espers are considered far more dangerous than kids.

In Sato's case. They caught him and deemed him useful but hard to control. So they put him on meds to control his mood (standard procedure) and tried to delay or halt the onset of puberty until they had full control over him. Needless to say Sato didn't stick around for so long, but the meds did have after effects. Most of them not really documented because the government doesn't really care. It's the reason Sato has such a flat affect (so much is known about the meds) but is likely also the reason why he is so small and looks so young despite being of adult age. They pretty much fucked him over.

Poor guy! At least some of him is getting back to normal, then. Those drugs sound really nasty.

The influence of those drugs will always linger, but he gets a bit better yeah. He remains that young look, though

A bit taller and more mature, I guess. None of the men in his family are particularly tall or buff but they don't look like a 16 year old like Sato does XD
