Description Speedpaint Video HERE!

EDITS: Thanks to the amazing critics that I've received, I did some minor edits on the overall picture:
- Changed a little bit the colours of the foreground in order to make it 'less green'.
- Added the refected glow coming from the magic in the unicorn's face and the rocks with the runes.
- Added the cast shadow for the dragoness and the unicorn
- Detailed a little bit more the scales on the dragoness in the places where light is reached.
I really appreciate all the feedback received, even if I couldn't change everything, I will have the topic where I failed in mind for my next work ♥

Who is the intruder here?
That unicorn that is trying to attemp agains a mother's most precious treasure?
Or that dragoness who is risking the forest's ecosystem by nesting there?

 English
Full illustration commission for She asked for a fairy dragon in a fairy glade and we discussed some possible ideas, and this came out Took around 7 hours, and I tried to do a more painterly style here drawing some textures by myself. I like the outcome, even if I have to practice how to paint dragons a lot!

Even if I'm happy with the result, I know there are plenty of ways to improve this picture, but I'm not sure how this could be done and I decided to open up critics to see if I can get any tips to help me create better works in the future. Critics on this artwork will be GREATELY appreciated.

Thank you very much I paid more attention to color values in this drawing than what I used to do, I'm happy to hear that the colours look harmonious. Maybe the tone for the horn is very bright, however this was intentionally as I wanted the 'Magic' to pop out of the image in a sort of way
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a critic on this artowrk, I appreciate it a lot ♥

The dragon stands out to me as the best part of this picture. Her eyes and muscles look real and her defensive pose is interesting. There is a lot of green, with the grass, the dragon, the rocks and the unicorn's magic all being different shades, so the little bit of orange on her face made me look there first, so I saw the whole scene from her point of view, in a way.

I can only think of two criticisms to make. The unicorn's mane and tail are streaming as if he is running fast, but there is a tree right behind him, and his back legs are together, so he must be just starting to run. The dragon's tail tapers gradually through first bend, right under her right wing (her right, our left), but then it appears to stay the same thickness for the rest of its length, instead of continuing to taper.

All together, it's a very beautiful and engaging piece, and going into my very small list of favorites.

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave this critic
It's good to hear that the contrast put the viewer on the dragon's point of view of the scene.
I agree to you comment about the manes, they are way too moved for the pose. I wanted to make as if he was standing and started to raise on two feet. There aren't any indicators that it's a windy day, so by no mean they should be moving like that, thanks for pointing it out And the change on the dragoness' tail thickness is something that I'd have never noticed on my own haha thank you a lot for these helpful tips!

WOW!!! This is breathtaking as usual!!!!!
I've got to say, you've really nailed the forest tones and lighting in this!!!
I really love the details in the dragon's wings and up its neck!! The twisty trees really give this a fantastical and myserious effect!!!

Really hard on what to find flawed in this, but I'd say maybe the glow from the unicorn's horn could perhaps be projected more on its face? As well as the glow from the rocks be shined on the grass blades in front of them?

Besides that..... just WOOOOWWWW!!! Keep it up!!! You really are doing a great job on painting dragons as far as you've got!! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave this critic And you're totally right, the 'magic' on the horn and the runes were a last minute added detail, and I really wanted to finish this picture so I rushed a little, but it will look much better of the glowwas reflected in the stones and the unicorn's face. Thank you ♥

Dalgeor In reply to GraubenDawb [2017-03-05 14:00:27 +0000 UTC]

Aww muchas gracias

Muchas gracias Le meto mucho empeño a mejorar.

This is a very beautful artwork - I have been waiting to see it after seeing some of the WIPs on Instagram and I did not get disappointed I love the colopurs you used, the greens and loght yellows of the bright parts and the slightly blue hues of the forest in the background. The dragon actually looks great, I would not say that you need to practice them much more. The head is like perfect and could not be any better <3 You're getting really better and better in your illustrations I am in great awe for your progress

since you suggested critique I will only write one suggestion I might have. This scene seems to be lighted with a bright light from the left side - we have a strong shadow on the foreground (casted probably by some tree) and a darker foreground also in shadows of trees. So we are lacking a cast shadow of the dragon - especially the hind leg  it is heavily highlighted from our left side, so we should get a shadow on a grass to the right.

Some shadow of the unicorn body might also be a nice defining touch... yet it is not necessary. Also I think that adding a highlighted scales on the dragon's neck and shoulder might be a nice detail - dragon's butt also could be slightly brighter since there is no shadow from the wing to hide it.

Dalgeor In reply to AonikaArt [2017-03-01 18:18:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much for such kind words Moni It means a lot to me and makes me feel very happy that the efford that I'm putting on improving is showing up already
I totally forgot about cast shadow! Thanks for letting me know and taking the time to explain this to me I agree with you, they both should have shadow. And the scale's placement that you suggested is also very helpful, as I wasn't sure about how much 'texture' I should add to the dragon in order to do not make her too full of details and overwhelming to the viewer.
I'll write some notes here of all the feedback I've been getting in order to try to avoid making the same mistakes the next time.
And thank you
