Description This is a low resolution digital photo of the actual drawing. I didn't have a scanner at the time and this was the only way to document it. For a close up view, [link] but it's low resolution as well.

I was commissioned for this portrait by the subject's grandfather. I had the hardest time getting that cardboard children's book to look right because of the angle and the way the pages were shaped. The book was surprisingly difficult and enticed more erasing then the little girl! The reference photo had a stark black background that was completely un-fitting for the photo, thus, I left it out.

I realize this is sometime later, but this picture is amazingly detailed. You seem to capture the child's intent focus on the book. I really like the picture!

Awesome, she's too cute! Really nice job on this! Although leaving out the background, kind'a makes her arm look like it's disappearing into nothingness, but just black would look odd. The book turned out nice too!

THANKS! Yeah, I was torn on the whole background/foreground thing, but just decided to leave things simple so as to not take away from her. I was also still inexperienced at making portraits on a commission basis. I've learned alot since then from the other artists on Da.

I may get into doing commissions....ppl keep saying they'd like to have one done, and stuff, but I dunno. I wouldn't know what to charge let alone feel right about it.

Oh, yeah, that is the hardest part, feeling comfortable charging money. You don't know what is a fair amount, and you're afraid they will say it's too much and change their mind. The best thing to do is see what other artists are charging. If you are still not comfortable with it, charge less until your confidance grows with your skills. I charge no less than $100 for a 13X15 portrait now. It all varies. Good luck!

I just like being able to see a nice picture and want to draw it. I can find what *I* like and do it. With commissions you're not going to have that all the time. My portraits aren't that bad, but I dunno what to do.

This is so incredibly beautiful, neighbor! Oh, if I could only afford to commish you myself! I cannot do real people AT ALL! I did an anime version of my four girls but put it in my scraps because the scan is crappy!

Thank you very much! Yeah, because I'm used to drawing realistically I'm fascinated by the idea of drawing manga-ish. I just gotta figure out how to make myself and my friends look manga-ish and yet it still look like them enough to where you can tell it's them.

Not all that easy a feat, my friend! Since I was having a hard time with that, I also tried to incorporate my girls' personalities into their anime characters as well. It helped! I'm currently going back over the sketch with a mechanical pencil, to sharpen up the lines. Then, I'll take a digital photo of it and post it that way. Hopefully then it'll look good enough to move it to my formal gallery!

This is cool....talking to a local artist! Especially one with your phenomenal level of skill!
