Description
Another early morning shot of a slowly moving bee.Tech Specs: Canon 1D Mark III (F13, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens (2x ) + a diffused MT-24EX (0 FEC). I used a grape leaf to keep the background from being black.

I marked this as unfair, despite the "high rating" as compositionally, this shot is superb. I think the critique was a bit "bookish" in its verbatim approach to negative space, positioning, etc. Too often do people forget the power of a simple diagonal line, converging diagonals, or even the power of a *centered subject*. The rule of thirds, the golden ratio, etc. are all guidelines, not hard and fast rules, and other concepts of composition are often overlooked in favor of these somewhat over-flaunted "rules".
I don't think there is a single thing wrong with out this shot is composed. I think the centered subject on a diagonal, as well as the implied convergence of two diagonals between the angle of the reed and the angle of the insect, shows more than enough compositional prowess. I've long followed Delantech's work, and I am astonished by his still at such small scales and with such limited depth of field to work with.
Purely from a critique standpoint, your verbal description of your critique and the rating don't really match. You seem to have numerous issues with the composition, and yet you rated technique very high. If you write any future critiques, I would try to keep the explanation of your critique in line with your ratings, and vice versa.

I am well aware that these things are not "rules", and that centred compositions etc. can result in stunning photographs. I don't sit here when I'm writing a critique and run through all of the "rules" in my head, comparing them to the shot - partly because I don't know most of them, but mostly because I know that they don't really matter.
All I did was state how I felt the composition could be improved. I'm sorry if my opinion seems "bookish" to you. And I still think that it's too tightly cropped on the right, and though the centring and empty space do work, it's probably not how I would have done it.
I am also astonished by =dalantech 's skill at this, which is why I gave such a high rating. It's a superb shot.
The reason I gave such a high technique rating is because, while I disagree with some of the compositional choices, everything else about this is flawless. All my criticisms of the composition are very minor things; the only reason they take up so much of the writing is because there was nothing else to suggest improvements for.
I'm sorry my critique wasn't to your taste, but it's just how I feel about the shot.

Also, I'm sure I do forget the importance of "wrong" compositional techniques, as you mentioned, but that's mainly because I don't know the rules and how to break them. Everything I think about composition comes from gut instinct - if I think something looks wrong, it's just because I do. It's not because is disagrees with some rule that someone made up.
And this was the first critique I ever wrote. Give me a break.

Thanks for the critique! I take a lot of horizontal images, so from time to time I try to shoot a vertical. With this subject and angle I thought it best to center the frame -in order to have the bee looking to one side I'd have to cut off a part of it. As for the depth: It's a single frame at 2x and F13 and all the important bits are in focus
