Description Oka Megumi (Jamie Robinson) is © 1977 - 2009 Toei™ Animation. Image is © 2009 Farlow Studios.com.

This is personal project of mine that is long overdue. I intend to draw one female character on every cartoon/animation/animé that has, one way or another, influenced me. And being a Filipino who was born in the 70s, there's no better start than Voltes V.

I chose to color Megumi and the Volt Lander as high a saturation as I can to pay homage to the medium it was originally on. I also intentionally drew the Lander behind her to resemble the toy (I own the GX-31 Soul of Chogokin version) rather than try to modernize it in any way, again keeping with the original.

[EDIT] To those who may not know what Voltes V was and is willing to read, click this [link]

Dedicated to the child within us all.

This is nice work, you've taken an anime character and drawn her in a style that belongs to a western comic. Come to think of it; many early anime shows with cool looking mechs would appeal to the west better if the characters didn't have the big Bambi eyes, but I guess that's a big influence. Also, when was the last time you've seen a hair bow on a heroine? Probably doesn't look like a strong female character would want to wear one, but there's anyways room for exceptions.

Just looking at this image makes me hear the Voltes V theme in my head. I watched the Filipino dub, so I'm more familiar with her as Jamie Robinson. Love the gradient shading you applied on Lander-5.

Love this piece! Doing "Jamie Robinson" justice. Loved the series and would watch it with my cousins whenever we visited the Philppines.

Very nice, but I think the throwing stars are a bit too blurry. It took me a bit to realize that they were there at all.

Good, because you shouldn't see those stars if someone of Oka's skill at throwing them are of any indication until they're embedded in your skull.

Very nice! But the hair is the wrong color

DaggerPoint In reply to Kouban [2009-06-18 04:34:34 +0000 UTC]

I intentionally colored her hair black, with the highlights shaded in blue as a homage to her original hair color. Having all blue hair simply does NOT blend on my style.

I've seen some of Voltes V, it's a really great show whose story holds up really well even today. Unfortunately as far as I know it was never shown in the US. Even Combattler they only brought out the toy and used the machine in some comic books, they never actually showed the anime...

Let's volt in!

Thanks. I was inspired by a particular episode in the series when I was looking for some action poses for the character.

Nice one, Was just called Voltron over here. Loved the in-joke Geki Genger, in Martian successor Nadesico.

This brings back memories though, I had the toys for the Animal and Vehicle Voltrons

A wonderfully drawn piece and compelling image. Put me in mind of the robot Voltron, probably just the color scheme. Makes me want to know more.

DaggerPoint In reply to hulkdaddyg [2009-05-28 18:05:06 +0000 UTC]

It was implied that Voltron is somewhat an imitation to the original concept that is Comabattler V and Voltes V. If you ask any of my Filipino brethren who grew up watching both animations, they'll probably tell you the same thing.

Here's an article about the subject [link]

Don't mind me and my personal views, I'm simply a lemming when it comes to Voltes V.

hulkdaddyg In reply to DaggerPoint [2009-05-28 23:37:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the article links. I had to reread your comments, I didn't realize it was fanart, duh! Indeed Voltron was a poor copy for the mindless. I didn't even see Voltes V until much later and it was marketed here as Shogun Warriors. I think I saw one episode only and even then I thought they would totally destroy Voltron! What I saw were three flyin vehicles that combined three different ways, QUICKLY! I was floored after Voltron's 10 minute combining. I am going to look into getting the animes so I can know the real deal. Thanks again.

DaggerPoint In reply to hulkdaddyg [2009-05-29 02:55:06 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, three machines with three different combination? Seems you're referring Shin Getter Robo. I believe that was part of the Shogun Warriors toy line that were imports of Japanese super robots of the 70s.

You are absolutely right. I probably never saw Voltes V which is sad because from all accounts it is superior to Voltron.

Ok...if this is the start, I can't wait to see the rest of the "Ladies of Influence" series.

Kudos on a great sense of motion, and wonderfully capturing the nostalgia of the original animated series.
