Description So here is my first proper coloured pencil piece - my parents gave me a box of Karismacolours years ago, but I never learned to use them to their full potential.  Recently, however, I've been inspired by Lachri Fine Art and the Sharpened Artist podcasts and really wanted to give them a proper try.

This was really interesting to do, and so therapeutic!  It took a lot longer hours-wise than painting, but because it was so easy to pick it up, do a bit and then put it down again, I found I could work on it a little bit during the week after my studying.  I did it on Crawford & Black watercolour paper because I did the initial base in watercolour pencils to try and eliminate the grainy look of the pencils as I wasn't planning on using solvents or blenders.  I did the initial base too light, so it was a tad pointless, but it gave me an ok starting point for the rest of my layers  Also, it was a cheap pack of paper which turned out to be pretty bad for coloured pencils - too many layers and the paper started to fluff up and tear!  It wasn't unusable, but I'd like to try a different paper next time.

I learnt so much from doing this piece (as well as from the many SA podcasts I listened to while drawing :giggle) and it was really interesting blending the colours right there on the page as opposed to in a palette, separate from the artwork.  I'm sure I will do another coloured pencil piece in the future, but I'm looking forward to doing some looser work in the meantime to get over the minute detail and time-consuming work in this piece!

I'm also looking forward to doing a full piece which isn't of a sleeping animal

It's really stunning artwork as for the first normal try with colored pencils! I'm really amazed! The drawing it self looks really impressive! The use of colors is great and the anatomy looks very good! Great work!  (I'm also watching Lachri Fine Art on youtube she has really good content there )

I like that you did not overwork this piece with an attempt to bring the color out more, giving it this wonderful soft touch.  I have a problem with my color work as I am very unsure as to how to use them correctly.  Need more practice.  Great piece and I will enjoy seeing your next color work.

Thank you I was a bit worried about the brightest orange/red part on his side as I didn't want to make it garish, but at the same time that bright red was the reason I wanted to draw this.  It was also tough to tell whether the green/red combo looked good together.  It's nice to know that you think so

Thank you! I found coloured pencil was harder to get the detail with than paint, because I couldn't just cover it over if I went wrong!

And thanks for the , much appreciated

well done  Watercolour paper is often helpful for softer-textured pieces.  Like peaches, or a red panda

Thanks (and thanks for the , too! ) I imagine that probably applies to higher quality watercolour paper - the stuff I've got starts to bobble even when I'm only using watercolour!  I've got to be pretty careful with it...a lesson in why paper seems expensive sometimes!  It would be interesting to try out different types of paper
