Final Week of the Kickstarter! www.kickstarter.com/projects/5…
What does a struggling villain (and the artist behind him) need to do to get noticed? That's right, OVERCOMPENSATE! The Scapula: Overcompensation Edition has a fancy new color cover slapped onto the same old rotten zine, as a reward for the most generous of supporters. All backers at the $125+ Levels will have their copies of the Scapula Anniversary zine upgraded with a brand-new color cover!
This was a ton of fun to create, not only in re-imagining what Scapula and the Sinister Monsters would look like in a more 'hardcore' light (I'd like to think this would work on a heavy metal album cover...or maybe even just Heavy Metal magazine) but also in studying artists from genres I usually don't visit much myself. The shadow of Frank Frazetta looms large over fantasy illustration, so it actually becomes a challenge NOT to copy him; the warrior woman on the left (tearing up the original Scapula zine, in case it's too small to see) is a spoof of any number of similar characters from artists like Boris Vallejo. More than anyone, however, I was inspired by the incredible artwork of Alex Horley (Alessandro Orlandelli) to paint this, namely the awesome work he's done for metal artists like Rob Zombie and GWAR. I'm nowhere near as good as he is, but it was still fun to give it a shot. Hope you enjoy!
