Description
2018 marks the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s classic, Frankenstein. Seen here are some of the many drawings I’ve done of the ol’ Monster from my top five favorite Frankenstein films:
"Son of Frankenstein" (1939)
A lot of snobby critics seem to think that only James Whale could make good Frankenstein movies for Universal, but I'd still make the argument that Rowland V. Lee's entry is far superior. It boasts a smart story, beautiful art direction, and amazing performances by Basil Rathbone, Lionel Atwill, and especially Bela Lugosi as Ygor. Although some folks may be upset that Boris Karloff isn't at the center of attention for this movie he still gets his best moment ever as the Monster when he discovers the death of a certain character...
"Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein" (1948)
Possibly the best of the 'A&C meet the Monsters' films (heck, maybe even the best A&C film period), this horror-comedy was a strangely fitting end to the Universal Frankenstein series and remains a fan favorite to this day.
"Frankenstein Conquers the World" (1965)
While I do admit my favorite parts of this movie are the 'bonus' kaiju (Baragon and Oodako), they really are just the 'dessert'; the real meal of the story is the origin of the new Frankenstein monster, whose immortal heart is smuggled by Nazis during WWII into Japan just in time for the Hiroshima bombing. The result is a part-crazy, part-creepy movie that's a bit different in tone and style than Toho's Godzilla films but is still just as entertaining.
"Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (1974)
It's far from being the most critically acclaimed of the Hammer series, and yeah, Peter Cushing and David Prowse both look kinda' silly, but I still say this is a solid horror film and a fitting swan song to Cushing's long and beloved run as Dr. Frankenstein. The insane asylum setting is perfectly creepy and even if the monster costume is stiff and lifeless it still has a very cool design (and hey, I personally prefer monsters to be monstrous!).
"Young Frankenstein" (1974)
With all due respect to Bud and Lou, THIS is truly the greatest Frankenstein comedy of all, if not the greatest horror-comedy of all time. Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks really did their homework in recreating the genre classics while still bringing original (and hysterical) material to the mix; the result is the perfect parody and loving homage to the legend of Frankenstein. Blücher!

I give you a thumb-up for choosing Son of Fankenstein for this list. It's my favorite Universal Franky flick, too.

Pretty cool. I like the varied choices here. Glad to see I am not the only one that likes Monster From Hell. I think I would probably pick the same ones. Though I am way more of a fan of the original Frankenstein film. (Though Meets the Wolfman is a close 2nd). And as much as I adore the comedy of Young Frankenstein...I would probably switch it out with Frankenstein Unbound. I can't really explain it...but I just love the timetravel stuff in the movie. And the ending with the lasers is just so nuts. Well...that and the ambiguous God like talking Frankenstein that claims that he is now "unbound". I mean the movie has John Hurt and Raul Julia as the doctor for gosh sake.

Interesting! I've neither seen nor heard of that film, but will have to seek it out. Thanks for the suggestion!
Some people asked why I didn't include 'Frankenstein meets the Space Monster', since it's often compared to 'Frankenstein Conquers the World'. The answer is that, even though the film has some fun-looking monsters and laughably bad aliens, it's still a boring, boring, BORING movie, with endless padded scenes of music that makes me think of the less enjoyable parts of 'The Graduate'. I wouldn't mind drawing that crazy-cool Space Monster, but it sure doesn't belong on my favorites list.

Yes, indeed! It was the final film in Hammer's original horror cycle (they wouldn't return to horror films until years later with "The Woman in Black"), not to mention the final (as to date) Hammer Frankenstein movie and final film of director Terence Fisher.

Nice! I was a tad confused until I realized you didn't necessarily say you were born the same YEAR as Frankenstein (unless if there's a two hundred-year old DeviantArt user around here).
