And here we are in summer of 2011, and I think it's probably time to redraw this picture with Lola Bunny being dragged away to the looney bin. Yep. . . There's just something about Bugs that really drives the ladies mad.

To the best of my knowledge, Honey was merely a rare supporting character who would show up periodically in cartoons where Bugs needed a female counterpart, but she was never seriously stated to be his girlfriend.
Being honest, Honey Bunny was only created it seems for merchandising purposes.

Not really, Honey Bunny was planned to be put in Space Jam (in her 'Bugs-like' version), but eventually they decided to take comic version of her and update her to Lola. Everything is described here: [link]

Honey-cousin and Honey-girlfriend are different characters. One is based on another, but they are different.

Basically, Honey Bunny from 1953 (Bugs' cousin) is a prototype version of Honey Bunny that appeared in 1966. In 1966 artists working on Looney Tunes comics wanted to 'engage Honey Bunny in some stories', however, at that time they had a version of her from 1953 which looked too outdated for them. They decided to re-desing her. Apparently the only thing they didn't change is her name.
Today some fans who remember Honey Bunny consider her a proto-Lola, and the most probably Lola Bunny is just an updated version of Honey Bunny from comics. What's more, they wanted to put Honey Bunny in Space Jam: [link] but eventually they chose to update her and change her name to a 'more modern' and 'sexier' one.
