This beautiful waterfall is called Aldeyjarfoss, it was our first destination on the way down the F26 which lead us through the middle of Iceland, all the way to the south, passing by many beautiful areas in the highlands. When we arrived it was around late noon and the sun was shining. We immediately started to find out whether we can have one of us posing next to the waterfall for a pictures we'd like to take during sunset or dawn. While we came closer to the waterfall I discovered that there was a beautiful lush green grotto on the other side just below the ledge, where most photographers stand on while not noticing the beauty below them. So I already made a mental note to not take that hackneyed composition from the ledge above, instead climb down to the green grotto below and try my luck there, risking to not get that "moneyshot", which a lot of photographers are really obsessed about, instead my hope was to get away with an original and refreshing capture of this beautiful place.We almost spend a good half hour at the rocks right next to the waterfall. While sitting there the noise of the rushing water and the bright sunshine was so soothing that I almost felt asleep on the rock. We decided to go back to the car, have late lunch and get some quality sleep before heading back for sunset and a looong night...

What's really cool is that those basalt columns look just like the ones recently found on Mars.

actually they are not that uncommon, you can see them everywhere on the world where there has been volcanic activity, those columns are formed when lava cools down very quickly.

Yes, but they only form in the presence of water. The rapid cooling agent is water. Basalt columns on Mars are one of the many pieces to the puzzle of Martian history that show it was very wet.

i love the mix of colors here! theres the green in the foreground and the beautiful blue waterfall with a brown rock backdrop with the pinkish sky in the background. amazing.

ich war einfach so gelangweilt von der üblichen perspektive dass ich geradezu zwanghaft überall rumgeklettert bin um eine andere schöne perspektive zu finden, dafür wurde ich weiter unten sogar mit einer leeren fast neuwertigen LEE filter tasche belohnt, welche wohl erst kürzlich von einem der fotografen die nur oben fotografiert haben verloren ging

Sehr gern! Tja, es ist immer schwer zu entscheiden eine neue Perspektive an einem schon viel fotografierten Ort zu wählen und dann auch noch eine zu finden die mit der "Standard" Bildkomposition auf Augenhöhe ist. Die Standardkompo ist ja auch aus einem Grund die meist-genutzte... das ist halt wieder so ein Problem weil alle halbwegs zugänglichen Top Spots schon unzählige Male in feinstem Licht fotografiert worden sind. Ich versuch dem jetzt immer schon vorher aus dem Weg zu gehen und komplett neue, wenn auch vielleicht visuell nicht so interessante Motive zu finden... dafür müssen sich die Bilder dann aber nicht 1000 anderen der gleichen Stelle messen / vergleichen lassen. Ein weites Feld...

ja, für mich ist es als fotograf und künstler inzwischen nicht mehr befriedigend "nur" eine super aufnahme bei gutem licht mit "standardkompo" zu machen, das befriedigt höchstens die augen für eine weile, aber nicht die seele.
umso erfreulicher ist es für mich dass speziell diese aufnahme ganz gut ankommt, wo ich mich strikt geweigert habe nur ein einziges foto vom standard-spot mit standardkompo zu machen und stattdessen alles aus spiel gesetzt habe um ganz bewusst eine ganz andere perspektive zu fotografieren
da ich zum glück nicht damit meine brötchen verdienen muss kann ich mir es erlauben die "money shots" bewusst auszulassen und meinen inneren frieden zu finden

Absolut richtig! Ja, es ist schon auch sehr schön, wenn man mit der Fotografie nicht die Brötchen verdienen muss und sich da komplett frei austoben und rumprobieren kann ohne finanzielle Konsequenzen.

Damn...that should replace the shot of Aldeyjarfoss that Wikipedia is using for said entry...it's a much more breathtaking and majestic shot than what's being used currently (no offense to the photographer[s] of said article's current photograph).

thank you! well, I think for wikipedia a documentary style photo from the ledge is fine, there is no reason to use an artistic photo which might lead to a wrong impression
