On the outskirts of Denton, Kansas, stands an eerie place of joy turned to sorrow - a sprawling amusement park called "Playland America." Once a vibrant hub of laughter and excitement in the 1980s, its rusted rides now stand as silent sentinels amidst the encroaching wilderness.

After many years of great success, a young child was tragically killed in a freak accident aboard the mini-train that once wound through the park. Only months later, another child died there, this time the victim of an explosion at a caramel-corn stand, her face scalded beyond recognition by the syrupy mixture. It wasn't long before more and more innocent children lost their live in unthinkable - and often unbelievable - accidents. The Denton County safety commission was slow to respond, for the park brought sorely needed revenue to the struggling town. But after a board of director's son was shredded in a house-of-mirrors accident, the commission decreed its closure in 1988, leaving behind a horrifying legacy of 31 children killed in only two years.

Today the park is closed, even to trespassers. It is unusually silent but for the occasional creaking and groaning of old rides. But on summer nights, when the temperature and humidity won't let you sleep, if you listen close you can still hear children . . . screaming.
