One note: If, for some reason, you want your fantasy creatures to be (comparatively) realistic, maces are almost useless underwater because the large surface area is slowed by water resistance. Just as we make our fighter jets narrow and pointed to slide through the air, the most useful weapons underwater are narrow pointed weapons that slide through the water (and flesh) without much resistance.

You can see this in the real world, with both shark prods and primitive hunting spears/arrows; we only club fish on the riverbank, or if they're stranded in VERY shallow water.

But then, if fantasy art was supposed to be realistic, any female warriors would wear complete-coverage armor, large dragons couldn't fly (or even breathe), and 99% of everybody's favorite gaming swords/axes/maces/etc. couldn't be swung more than once or twice without dislocating the character's arm. So fantasy realism's always a matter of personal taste.
