Honestly, it's more good luck than good judgement.

I was shooting with a Nikon D90 and a Tamron 17-50/2.8 lens on a tripod.

I just did a manual long-exposure with a low ISO and got my friends to play with sparklers. Beyond that it was just luck to get some good shots.
