I worry that we are raising a generation or twelve of really powerful, really stupid wizards and witches. I mean, with these wands and spells we're basically putting atom bombs in the hands of children, maybe they should learn, I don't know, what an atom is? Defense against the dark arts is clearly important. Clearly. But so is, you know, science and history.

It took me longer than most people to come around to Harry Potter. It's not that I hated it so much as I just didn't care. But come around I did and now that it's all over I'm totally on board a train that's no longer moving! Whoo hoo.

I really love the series and I really love that in an increasingly niche era, where everyone's everything is personalized and separated and avatared, we have a near-universal touchstone for the world-entire. Everyone knows Harry. Everyone loves Harry. And that's how it should be.

But teach the kids some damn geometry, would you please?

They probably learn basic math and grammar at home, if they live exclusively in the wizarding world. I like to imagine that Muggle Studies touches on more advanced concepts of science and math, while not outright getting in depth with it. I can't imagine it going over well with the more traditional pureblood families if Dumbledore wanted to enact muggle-based science and math courses. Arithmacy is probably the magical equivalent to advanced math, at least.

As cool as it would be to be a Witch going to Hogwarts I would seriously miss Biology classes 8( I'd probably be that kid lugging around science textbooks to keep up xD

I have always wondered this! How were they going to survive in the world (muggle) if they didn't know math or science or basic grammar! It never mentioned in the book how they were learning more...vocabulary. But I'm still Potterhead despite that one problem. β™₯

I've always had a problem with their schools. It's kind of annoying that there is no mention of normal subjects. Or any mentions of wizarding schools besides the big three.
Luckily J.K. Rowling more than makes up for that. I mean she created Snape, Neville, and Dobby. Nuff said.

I've loved the series for a while, but I always wondered where the ordinary classes were. i mean, you start Hogwarts when your like 11-12, so obviously your not done with ordinary schooling, like math, science, non-magical history, english... XD

I've been thinking this for YEARS!! <3 I was always wondering when/if they were going to get a normal education. Everyone needs basic math skills. Some people say maybe it doesn't apply to their society, but their society uses money doesn't it? And if you don't want to get ripped off when you spend your money, you need to know some damn math!!

kliudom [2012-01-29 20:39:39 +0000 UTC]

well they probably dont learn these thinks because in theyr world its not necasary, why learn somethink that you dont nead, i doubt tha theres even a wizard teacher who knows this stuff, they would have to hire a non-magical human and i doubt a lot of people would want to teach s class ful of wizards and witches without having any powers themselfs, also the only way they would actualy need this stuff is if they desiht to incorpurate mugual technology in to theyr world which i doubd

This is BRILLIANT!

But seriously, I agree. I mean, all the Muggleborns would know how to write and do math and stuff up to the average 11-year-old level (and possibly some half-bloods). And I assume purebloods would get taught this at home. But still, they're all gonna be kinda stupid. Why is there no science and math and stuff at Hogwarts? Its kinda stupid.
