it's not an observation ! it's a judjement of yours, not meant to harm (...I think ?) but some people could take it as an insult. (that's better.) *sighs* words are so hard to work with...
and well, I belive that "sophisticated" talking is considered as an insult, because it creates an impression of dominance, like the person you're talking to is... hum... I don't have any other words, but a person, when being talked to like that, may feel like he/she is just some shit on the road o_o and internet is a "place" in which, especially in deviantART, we are "decontracted" and do friendly chats and go crazy, you see ? so yeah, peoples here have an even bigger tendency to take it bad when it's disagreeing with their opinion. if not, they'll take it good, or bad... depends of the person too, and their own "level of language"...
*sigh* hey, I know that changing your "level of language", or whatever is it called in English (in French we say "niveau de language" so I'm translating it like that...) is hard, I had to do it myself, because when I was even younger (6 years old ? 7 ? maybe 8), I talked in a very strict way, "like very intelligent adults did" (well everyone told me that I talked smart, but I never understood why they were saying that...) and other children rejected me and bullied me because of it... they found me strange, acting like that... damn, I hate to remember those things...
well, that's damn hard, but sometimes we have do changes...
and I'm sorry for you, but not everyone is able to change the way they talk like me and adapt to you, so sadly it's you who has to change... I can talk SMS (I hate it through), the "American slang" as well as "the normal way" and like this. well, I was even more classy when I was small, but it doesn't count. I talked French when I was small. I still didn't learnt English (blame the school system, not me).
I'm pretty sure that if you do that, peoples wouldn't get as agressive with you (normal reaction of the human when they belive that they are attacked, because "dominating" someone by the language is perceived as one. *shrugs* humanity has a strange big book of rules... ah and I'm not saying that you are attacking them. note the words "belive" and what I said earlier. and the people are quickly assuming things.)
well, you can get misunderstood because of those language things...
*sighs* yeah, when we talk to a person with a different "level of language", we have to make what I'd call as a translation. and exactly like with normal translations, there is often a lot of things that got their meaning completly transformed.
and what was a simple harmless statement turns into a quite hurting judjement !
