Description (Before i start i'd like to say that this IS NOT the Nautilus and I didnt get my inspiration from LXG.)

It's a steampunk submarine, what else can I say? I've sort of envisioned this as a kind of undersea hotel that travels, like a cruise ship but better.

Fabulous idea, comparisons to Nemo's ship are perhaps inevitable but the rendering is quite nice, and the idea of a submersible cruise ship is great. I think I even had a dream like that once.

You do know that the Nautilus was first conceived by French author Jules Verne, in his novel 20,000 Leages Under the Sea...yes?

I want to say first that the whale-like appearance is clearly intentional, and very clever. The placement of the eye-like porthole/gear decoration, as well as the parallel lines on the undersection of the bow both give the appearance of a living creature. But more than that, the pose of the ship, the way it's breaching the surface like a whale coming up for air (which is a sensible analogy in function as well as form, since a steam-engine would require fresh oxygen every so often). But my favorite aspect is the replacement of the blowhole waterspray with a pillar of smoke from the boiler.

Though I think that for subaquatic travel you'd need a differently designed smokestack, to prevent water coming into the furnace and extinguishing the fire.

OR the smokestack has a hatch that can be closed to prevent water from entering when they submerge. lol

I thought of that, but with no exhaust port, the smoke may back up into the furnace and smothering the fire out, or worse, building pressure and risking explosion. Unless there's a very high-volume temporary exhaust chamber in which it can collect while underwater. No, I rather think that the safest way would be a combination of the two strategies, having a uniquely shaped smokestack (perhaps with a cap which extends down over the mouth of the pipe), as well as a kind of airlock-temporary chamber, which pumps the smoke out when it grows full. This way, it could maintain air pressure to keep the water out, as it would only open when there was enough exhaust pressure built up to blast it outward; the force of the water closing the valve again.

Very little water, if any, would get in this way, and if the temporary chamber were built the right way, whatever little water did get in could just be piped back out again, or else cycled into the coolant system (though the pipes responsible for that would have to be treated to be resistant to the corrosion of sea-salt water.)

I have put a lot of thought into it, that's true. I don't know about "too much." I'm helping a friend with a steampunk story he's writing, and we hope to get it published. So hopefully I've put "enough" thought into it, rather than too much. There are submersible steam-powered vehicles in his story too, you see, so I actually kinda had this solution worked out ahead of time. But talking to you helped me refine it further, which is cool.

I switched tenses several times, for some mysterious reason, in that comment just now. Just wanted to say sorry for any confusion my typographical errors may cause. I'd fix it, but as I'm sure you're aware, I can't edit my comment once submitted. I really should have proofread it.

I am developing a non-commercial pen & paper roleplaying game, working title "the world of jules verne", in a world (some may call it "steampunk") full of technological wonders, somewhat like in the game arcanum (but without the magic). Right now, I am searching for artwork which I could use for the game, and this would be perfect. do you mind if I use it? Even if you do, please tell me!! Thanks a million, coco

hehe, I like it! I like the way you've given a mechanical object an organic feel-It reminds me of a blue whale ^.^

(( **has only just realised Fenster's already said this- but cant be bothered to delete it all**))

I also really love the texture of the water in the sea- its really nice!

Interesting... It has a very organic look to it - that jade circle below the windows looks like a whale's eye. you got a nice effect with the water, and I like the steam engine pipe (I wonder how that works underwater?).

keep it up!
