Description
Gerard is a 7 armed dæmon of twisty cubes. He will challenge you to twist and turn these puzzles back into order.
I’ve been reading the works of H.P. Lovecraft (after being intrigued by the lore from Arkham Horror The Board Game), and I have also been reading bits and pieces on 15th-17th century alchemists, so this pieces is largely inspired by these particular subjects.
The piece is 100% Adobe Illustrator CC and the puzzles depicted are all based off of existing puzzles, all of which I own and have solved. From left to right the seven puzzles are The Mosaic Cube, Hexaminx, Skewb, Standard Rubik’s Cube, Helicopter Cube (Curvy Copter Variant), Fisher’s Gold Skewb, and The Rex Cube. I almost used a Square 1 cube instead of the Fisher’s Gold Skewb so each hand is different “core mechanic” but the Gold Skewb is such a prize I really felt like it needed to be there.
The heptagram, at the base of Gerard, is a unique and ancient symbol, most commonly used as a seal to ward of evil spirits. In alchemy it referred to the 7 planets (known at the time) and was also a symbol used to indicate balance or perfection. The number 7 is a very popular symbolic number so the heptagram is also tied to very common themes: 7 days of creation, 7 days in a week, 7 colors in a rainbow and so forth and so on.
I like the symbol, as odd numbered stars are very intriguing shapes to me, and I do like the “perfection” meaning behind the icon, especially when tied to the puzzles. Gerard emerges from the depths of perfection, in each hand is a puzzle in a solved state, it is up to the individual to firstly take the challenge and break the perfection and secondly to restore it back to perfection.
Gerard isn’t an evil being, as dæmons are often not evil by nature, he’s just excited to meet someone new and present his challenges. His face makes me smile.
