Description
This is one of the sketches I did for the upcoming set from entitled Classic Mythology. This set will focus on 6 timeless Classic Mythologies that we have all come to love and enjoy during our lifetime. The mythologies spotlighted in this set are Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Celtic, Japanese and Hindu. Set scheduled to be released in early Spring 2012.www.pernastudios.deviantart.com
Hindu Mythology โ Durga was a form of Devi (meaning Goddess), the supremely radiant goddess, depicted as having eight arms, riding a lion or a tiger, carrying weapons and a lotus flower, maintaining a meditative smile, and practicing mudras, or symbolic hand gestures. The word Shakti means divine feminine; energy/force/power, and Durga is the warrior aspect of the Divine Mother. As a goddess, Durga's feminine power contains the combined energies of all the gods. Each of her weapons was given to her by various gods: Rudra's trident, Vishnu's discus, Indra's thunderbolt, Brahma's kamandalu, Kuber's Ratnahar, etc.

I really don't like being "that guy", but there is a fundamental issue here that I think needs to be addressed. It has to do with terminology that could potentially offend a viewer of this work, namely, "Mythology" being used in the context that is in. Hinduism is not Mythology, it is religion, it is the third most practiced religion in the entire world and it is still growing in developing. I guess my point is that while it is over five thousand years old, it has endured and is still important today, so while there was no harm done and there was certainly none intended as this work is a BEAUTIFUL rendition ofย a timeless Goddess, it should just be noted in the future as to avoid potential misunderstandings.
All of that said I think the craftsmanship is excellent, looking at the beautiful cropping of the image with its combination of loose and tight marks is a great indicator of the level of care and respect that went into the work. The artist obviously had an understanding of not only of this particular Hindu Goddess Devi Durga, they also have a clear understanding of the principles of design, elements of art and a great use of negative vs positive space. By skillfully concentrating on her center, she not only appears more infinite, but also more approachable, even an uneducated person would feel something divine by looking at this piece.
