That's not strange, that's perfectly normal, because whoever came up with his current design clearly had no clue what an aardvark looks like. If you look up Arthur's original appearance, it's a lot easier to tell.

Wait, his nose was huge in the first book and got smaller over time.
They had an "ask Arthur" on the official website at some point in the 90's. I vaguely remember asking about that, and where the kids that never appeared after the first book went.
I never got an answer.
