Near as I can tell from my study of his work, he creates a rough sketch with a relatively thick brush, then creates wide, large shapes (through a subtractive method of creating a large blob and removing the pieces to create the outline). Highlights get what I can only assume is a speckle brush. Shading and broader lights are wide, light strokes that build up. Now...to get that awesome textured outline, is the only mystery I'm trying to solve at the moment. I've come close, but it doesn't 100% emulate it. been studying his work now for about 2 weeks now. I really admire his beautifully simple designs.

It's not perfect, but it's the process I see when I reverse engineer what makes the design...well...the design. Not taking this picture into consideration but look at a handful of his daily pieces...they all have this big, blocky, simplified shape that's given just enough detail to make out what it is, with a bit of rendering to help the eye. Boil it down to the essentials and it's a large broad stroke that's been cut into with an erase to provide the basic outline. His process is almost like that of a sculptor.
