Book 9 is my favorite, but that's not to slight the rest of the series.
Having gone back and reread the series, I'm even more amazed at the complex story arc Cressida took us through - the education of a king. But, more than that, there's how things that might seem out of the blue on the first reading were indeed set up as the story developed. For example. For the reader, Ug's path to the shore at the opening of book 11 began in book 8 when he sat on the throne, but the witch reveals in her conversation with Hiccup that she's been grooming Ug for his fate for some time. Then, after Ug was in this "Checkmate" scene he ran off seemingly in fear of the witch. We can only imagine what the witch said to Ug during their face to face time, and what she said for him to hear thinking that she was talking to someone else. When I started my first reading of the series last December, I did not expect anything this complex and engaging.
The first HTTYD movie is still my favorite movie, but I'd rate the book series ahead of the movie for storytelling and entertainment value.

Yeah, the books are surprisingly well thought out, especially since at first glance they can seem rather improvisational. It's really quite masterful.
For sure!!

(Just finished this one.)
YES.
HOLY CRAP indeed.
That is the only appropriate response to the utter epicness that is this book.
I can't count the number of times I stopped for minor-to-major freakout sessions.

Cowell is just hella fine at writing page turners. They break a lot of rules and they're not really logical (they remind me of a grandpa telling a story.... which is actually what they're supposed to be LOL) but damn are they entertaining.
Get excited for the last one. (actually there's a LOT of good stuff ahead of you). But the last one is ridiculous.

This is one of the better book fanarts I've seen on dA.
I only just read this book recently. (I'd read the first eight when the first movie came out, and was waiting for the 12th book to be published before rereading them all but the second movie suddenly had me reading them again.) This is definitely one of Hiccup's sassiest victories. I'm excited to read the last book and see how everything is resolved.

I've been considering drawing a series of pictures of Hiccup at the beginning and end of each book. (I say considering. What I mean is I've been planning and making sure I can draw all his things in my own style first.) I enjoy drawing his face.
I think book four is one of my favorites in the series, for various reasons. Although his impossible victory in book three is hard to match.
