Ah!, Poison-type Pokémon. I'd dare to say that many trainers have a kinda complicated relationship with the Poison-type. I mean think about it; Poison-type Pokémon can be either really loved, popular and even useful (like Gengar, Venusaur, Nidorino, Crobat, Villeplume, etc.) or they can be really unloved, not very popular or even awkward (like Muk, Trubbish and Garbodor) and sometimes they are just plain irritating (like Zubat and Tentacool, Man! are these guys annoying!). And then we have Poison-type trainers. For some reason, since Team Rocket's era, the Posion-type has seemed to be the Pokémon-type of choice for most evil teams that compose the vast majority of the baddies in the Pokémon Universe, another reason as to why they are a complicated type of Pokémon, but sometimes they are used by the good guys too and they even can show a very comical side sometimes, like Ash's Haunter, James's Victreebell and Brock's Croagunk. And finally we have Poison-type Gym Leaders. Out of all six generation of Pokémon games we can only count three Poison-type specialists as Gym Leaders, plus another one as an Elite Four. And if we take into consideration that two of the Gym Leaders are family and one of those Gym Leaders is a member of the Elite Four as well, then we can conclude that Koga, the Poisonous Ninja Master is one hell of an specialist trainer and that poison flows strongly through his family's veins, since is his daughter Janine the one who innherits his legacy as Fuschia's city Gym Leader. He is well known, thanks to the anime for his use of the Poison/Bug-type Pokémon, Venonat and Venomoth, but he actually never used those two Pokémon in his original appearance in the games, he used both Muk and Koffing and his signature Pokémon was a Weezing. Maybe they changed that because they thought that people might get confused since Teams Rocket's James had a Weezing around that time too. Both Koga and Janine make an appearance in this artwork, but I'll make another illustration for Janine when the time to tackle the second generation arrives. For the time being I hope you all enjoy her little cameo in here. As for the battle with Koga, well, for everything that he stands for, I mean, being a freaking ninja and all, it pains me to say this but, he is not really all that hard, I mean if you have a balanced team that at the very least has a decent Psychic of Ground-type Pokémon, which by now you should have had plenty of chances to catch one for yourself, you shouldn't have much trouble beating his team to a pulp, and if you chose the Yellow version instead of the Blue and Red ones, it is actually even easier, because all he has are some Venonats and a Venomoth, Bug-types which have even many more weakneses to exploit, so I am sorry, but with all the hype and cool that Koga has going for him he's not much of a challenge, not even when he becomes an Elite Four. Now to cut some slack to the guy I still think he's a really cool character and I even had a hell of a time doing this illustration, and I am sure I'll do more artwork of him in the future but for now I am really glad of what I ended up with.

Next time in here, well I don't really think I need to say what's next, but I can only bet that you're all psyched-up for what's coming. Until next time!

Thanks to Bulbapedia for all the great references and original artwork of the franchise and Koga, Janine and all of their Pokémon belong to ©Nintendo and ©GAME FREAK.

Take a look at the other ones in the series so far:

¡Aah!

Yeah, Game Freak/Nintendo really don't give Poison types much respect. They're the only type without a Legendary Pokemon, and they are generally appearing in the service of various villainous flunkies. That said, they ought to get a bit more in Gen 6.
Koga had it tough in Gen 1 due to Psychics being broken, but in later generations his Weezing at least cut out Ground types. And Crobat's a great Pokemon too... maybe his choice of Pokemon was ahead of its time, as Venomoth and Forretress have got better as the generations go on. Still, no Elite Four member in Johto was really a challenge (except Lance if you did not Ice Punch/Ice Fang him to oblivion).
Now, the artwork, and the shading and use of purple really makes it stand out. It gives it a very eerie and sinister feel, as if you are already caught by Koga's powerful techniques to cripple his adversaries. The poses are excellent, evocative of classic ninja actions, and the Pokemon themselves look surprisingly daunting.

Thanks I am hapy you noticed all those details about the picture cuz I really gave them a lot of thought and about Poison-types yeah, I  like you think that they deserve a little more credit and respect than they do in the Pokémon universe, heck, I don't think many people have a any Poison types in their regular team of 6 (except maybe if they are either starters like Bulbasaur or really popular Pokémon like Gengar and Villeplume). And don't get me wrong, they are a fascinating and very useful type of Pokémon but to really earn the respect and credit they deserve they should have a) A real legendary, maybe even make it the mascot of a new generation game (seriously, there are too many Dragons and Psychics as lagendaries, surprise us original for once, Gamefreak!) and b) More decent and relevant Poison-type trainers and Gym Leaders because even when Roxie is a decent Gym Leader and Koga is one hell of a guy as well as is his daughter Janine their role and relevance in the games still leave something to be desired, and their abilities alone are not enough to display the full potencial that Poison-type Pokémon are abel to reach.

Poison types are very tactical Pokemon, you can have a lot of fun using their strategic edge to chip away at opponents. They hopefully will get some additional respect somewhere along the way, and they definitely do need more prominent trainers.

I must say that i respect Koga and the poison types, as many of my defeats at the E4 in soul silver was do to his Muk. (F*cking Minimize)
Still, he's a pretty cool gym leader.

Yeah, in newer generations he's a pretty cool and challenging gym leader, but in the first one where he debuted, he wasnt much of a challenge, hell, not to brag, but I don't think he even slowed me down when I paved through the Elite Four in Pokémon Silver, the first time I challenged them, and I was only 12 at the time. In short, both Koga and Poison types in general have earned a little bit more of respect througout the years but we still have to see the day where poison types get to be recognized as an important Pokémon type (seriously, so many Dragons and Psychics but not a single one Poison-type legendary, for Arceus sake!) well, but even with all that, I still think that Koga by himself is a pretty good character in the Pokémon Universe.
