Yes, Lucien is an Argentine black and white Tegu. There are several ways how you can tell the difference between the two species, not just by color. One of the ways is by looking at their snout. Golden tegus have a signal loreal scale that is located towered the end of their snout. But in Argentine back and white tegus's such as Lucien it is separated into three distinct scales. If you would like a reference I would Google image search. Thank you for your comment.

Would be nice to have one of these. They can be a bit rambunctious, I hear.

Some individuals are just like any other creature but as a whole I would say that the argentine back and white tegus are known to be one of the more, calm, friendly lizard that you can keep. Lucien (my tegu), has his good and bad days but mostly he’s a good boy that I take out often and pet and scratch which he seems to really enjoy. He also has his bad days when he’s shedding or hungry and acts up by huff etc. if he doesn’t want to he messed with. Out of all of the tegu's I would say the golden tegu is the most know to be more rambunctious and flighty out of the tegu family. But I do hear of the odd clam golden tegu that likes to interact with people. The most challenging thing about keeping a tegu to me was finding a big enough cage to house them in. My guy is currently in a 6x3ft terrarium which is the most minimal that you should get for a black and white tegu. Ideally an 8x4ft would be preferable. They grow very quickly (like an inch a week plus some weeks) so you have to be prepared. Also the other big problem is MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) which tegus are very prone to. I probably gave you more information than you wanted but I wanted to show you the good and bad things with these just if you chose to get one. In the end I love Lucien and wouldn’t give him up for anything. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. Also if you’re still curious about tegus you should go to thetegu.com. It’s a wonderful little community of tegu owners that have a lot of experience in raising tegus of all sorts. They were very helpful when I was first researching tegus and still help me if I have a question that comes up. Thank you for your comment and please keep an eye out for more pictures

Thanks for your reply. I haven't researched tegu husbandry, so it's interesting to hear about their habits right from a tegu keeper.

I'm aware that lizards of this size require large habitats. I'm not interested in adopting a large lizard b/c I don't think I could maintain a fair environment for its lifetime (10-20 years, at a guess). I've had a leopard gecko for ~9 years and a milk snake for just under two, and they're already a handful when they need to be.

Oh, how gorgeous! This is my dream pet, I cannot wait till I have my own home and the space/time to give one of these fabulous lizards a home. Im so in love. Does he ever show much affection for pettting?

CreaturesChild In reply to OtaniFumetsu [2011-03-15 16:41:22 +0000 UTC]

Thank you they more tolerate being pet and getting hold then anything, they are one of the nicer lizards to own though. They do get grumpy and have known to leave a nasty bite, you can go on "Thetegu.com" and find allot of good info. I would suggest investigating in depth about tegus before you make the first step thank you for your comment and your interest in Lucien I appreciate it

Has Lucien ever given you a chomp? It'll be a few years at least before I can feasibly get one. Someday tho.

No, he hasn't and I hope he never will, but he has his good and bad days. I've seen some tegu bites though and they aren't very pretty.
