Description My feelings on Halo 4's armor selection isn't a secret. I feel the vast majority of components don't 'feel' like they belong in a Halo game and definitely not on a Spartan. In fact the vast majority of helms don't work for me.

The Soldier:
My first gripe with this kit comes with it's components not stylistically matching. Take a look at the Soldier Chest and the Bulk legs, they're entirely different ascetically then the Soldier's shoulders and helmet. hard edges versus rounded. I can't even begin guess why they grouped these designs up, it literally looks like two half finished sets where thrown together as they ran out of time. But that's oddly not the case, there's concept art for the set complete with Bulk legs and stand-in recruit gauntlets.

The second comes from the helmet. It's got a tiny visor and a lot of the black composite layers showing all over the front and sides. This makes the entire helmet look like it's severely lacking in providing protection while also restricting the users field of vision. and this is suppose to be a common 'front line' helm?

It shouldn't be any surprise that my redesign focuses on these points, the "nose" is moved down and the visor opened up while the jowls get buttoned up with obvious vents. To round it out the 'scoops' on the side of the visor has been filled in incorporating components like helmet mounted lamps, cams and similar. These few changes make a world of difference in the helmet fitting in with previous halo designs while still retaining it's own unique flavor and style.

Pathfinder helmet is best helmet.

I had to look up the helmet to make sure I was getting the helmet right before I responded. The pathfinder helmet is one of the better looking of the new helmets, but it'd not all that great looking overall. I think part of that comes from the fact it generally breaks with many of the established norms of Halo helmets. From straight on the helmet sort of has this V shape thanks to the visor and the immediately surrounding components, while not bad in and of itself, it does make it look less like a halo helmet and more like something inspired by something else.Β Further, the visor, while large, doesn't extend much to the sides reducing the user's peripheral vision. I think if they had broke the helmet components apart more, instead of smoothly flowing into one another, it would have made the helmet fit with the more established helmets.

But like I said its one of the better helmets in the game and I could have easily gotten use to seeing it if it was used by ally Spartans. I think that's another bit of the failing for Halo 4. we've got more allied Spartans than ever before, but you only see generic recruits in gameplay. The cut scenes for Spartan ops, while including Majestic and palmer don't really help because you're never shoulder to shoulder with them. As such the helmets don't get that much personality attached to them. We don't see a Spartan wearing the operator and think 'that's hoja's helmet' or 'uh oh here comes ballsy.' It's just 'oh look, operator helmet.'Β

Compare that to the air assault, you look at that helmet and your mind jumps immediately to Kat.

I agree with you completely! I thought Halo Reach's armor selection was much more satisfying. But you really made this look great! Β

Don't get me wrong, there are things I absolutely adore about Halo 4's armory, like the chest, forearms, and legs options seeing the entire component being swapped out instead of little tidbits added atop the basic armor.Β  Granted I do so very much miss my pouches and helmet attachments...

Oddly enough. I like this helmet. I even went so far to make my own version taking parts from other helmets and incorporating them into a single design because overal the design of this helmet is great it shows that it is tough and blocky?

Blocky? If it's one thing I'd have a hard item calling the soldier helmet it's blocky. it's all smooth shapes, I'm not sure where you're seeing blocky, help me out here.Β

Blocky bulky its all the same right.

Something can easily have bulk without being blocky. Take the pathfinder shoulders for example, they are one of the more bulky options for your Spartan but they aren't blocky. The vast majority of the contours of the piece are smoothed out. Spartan armor have almost universally been a delicate balance between blocky and smooth, organic shapes. In Halo 4 this is much less true, many parts occupy one extreme or the other and very few hit that sweet spot.
