Royal Marines train on the River Tamar, using RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats) on June 20. 2017. Shitehawks (seagulls) follow closely. Perhaps they want to be bootnecks too..... Marines are known as bootnecks throughout the Royal Navy, and the name is believed to come from the leather stock worm around the collar of the old Marine uniform which was said to also guard against the throat being cut. US Marines are called leathernecks, perhaps for the same reason.
