Description This was a combination Hallowe'en costume and Practicum project, so I had to do everything myself, from sketch to drafting to cutting and construction.

It was a great learning experience. For example, I learned that it IS possible to gather 6 meters of fabric into a 20" strip... by use of a hammer.

That's a briliant dress! Did you use any existing patterns? If so, do you have a brandname or model name I could look for?
Thanks!

No, I drafted it by referencing a small diagram in this book: www.amazon.ca/History-Costume-…
Then I modified the design to get the double-breasted front I wanted, and the ruffle on the base of the bodice is my own design.

This is gorgeous...People-clothes seem much easier to sew, don't they, after sewing doll clothes for a while...

Can you go into detail on how you used a hammer to gather fabric?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cospigeon In reply to Windemere [2011-10-24 01:54:48 +0000 UTC]

I physically beat the fabric into submission.

When the fabric was being gathered, I occasionally paused to pound the bulk out of it with a hammer so that the gathers would be compacted enough to fit the skirt's waistband. When I was finished, I gave it a few extra hits just to show it who was boss.
