Description

"Born from the crossing strikes of Hiraeth's greatest conflict, the The Great Betwixt is a massive ravine that cuts across the realm diagonally, going beyond the northeastern and southwestern limits of the world. The only place unaffected in this scar is the very middle of Hiraeth, the land below the final impact. For many years, it lay as a smouldering wound, with chaotic magic bolting from wall to wall, but it was healed thanks to the guidance and magic of the Earthen Maiden, who watches over Hiraeth from the most inner core. The cleave was overgrown by nature and became the Great Betwixt, where the land goes wild with magic. Mushrooms won out against the trees, forming forests of fungi that carry reserve upon reserve of magic within them. Weird and surreal creatures flock to this place, and some learned to adapt and eke out a new living in the arcane ravine. One of these beasts is the Crivikan, who gleefully and gluttonously has embraced their new life among the mushroom orchards.

Once a tiny, wriggling creature who lived underground, Crivikans were about as long as a thumb and hid away from the world. Once the ravine became livable, they burrowed upwards and partook in the new flow of nurturing magic. They are now much larger beasts, standing taller than most travellers and carrying a wide, waddling frame. Crivikans love eating, and with a pouch extending their gullet, they scarf down mushrooms nearly all day. Though a lot of what they shove in their mouth ends up in their stomach, they also have another use for their food. As dawn arises to harken a new day, the Crivikans look for minerals and fruits to consume in the rivers and higher reaches of the Great Betwixt. They digest the larger parts of their meal but retain an acidic layer from their breakfast along their mouth pouch. As they shift to eating mushrooms, some of what they eat stays in their pouch and liquifies-- using their mouth like a cauldron, they keep a stewing elixir in their beak throughout the day. The type of elixir brewed in their pouch changes the colour of their scales and webbing around their body. Blue means a protective elixir, forming a barrier around the Crivikan, green means a medicinal elixir, letting them have intense regenerative properties, and orange means and volatile combination, letting them breathe out a magical blast. There are more colours as well, but more studies need to be done to see what each really means. Some days for a Crivikan are slow, and they may not even need their potent brew, letting it digest as the day goes by, but they continue this ritual regardless. In spite of their awkward appearance, they are wary beasts (when not stuffing their face), having retained memories of their past lives as squirmy critters, afraid of being squished under another's foot.

Of the few inhabitants of the Great Betwixt we have seen, two are gluttons with very varied diets; although I guess that is a requirement in order to survive in such a strange environment.

And I also think there are many alchemists who would want one of these creatures at their side, given the properties of their pouchs.

Very true, they probably compete for space sometimes-- its hard for creatures to resist the magic that gets ingrained into the land and eventually, into the beings that are eaten. Crivikans would definetly make for a handy friend, especially for alchemists. c:
