Description for

1. Male shoulders and female shoulders are different from each other. Usually in cartooning males will have more square or straight shoulders, while females have more rounded shoulders that curve. You can see this in the picture.

2. Crotch areas are nothing to be afraid of. I mean, c'mon people, if we're talking proportions here, we gotta include everything. We're not even talking about the actual reproductive organs! Everyone has one, and usually with my style I like to draw a crotch area because it really separates the legs for me and I know where I should separate them when drawing weird, twisted positions. If you look at the green arrow pointing to the lilac-colored legs, you can see a difference, a small difference, but a difference, in how the legs look a little more proportionate at the crotch.

3. Eyelashes. To be honest, I usually draw female characters with eyelashes and male characters without them because I think it makes them look more masculine/feminine. But that depends on many different characters. Not all girls need to be drawn with eyelashes and not all males need to be drawn without.  it honestly depends on the character, and I don't want people thinking that all women need to be drawn feminine, and males need to be drawn masculine.

4. Males tend to have straight chests and women tend to have boobs because that is human anatomy. Even if the person is a, let's say, a transgender female, she will now have boobs because that is who she is. Sorry if that isn't clear, but what I mean by that is you should always resect the person's gender and even if they were "born as [gender]", that doesn't mean if their gender isn't the same now, always respect it (Jeez I am bad at writing I'm sorry if that doesn't make any sense at all.)

5. BODY TYPES! This is important! Not all males are really skinny dudes with long limbs, and not all guys are buff and masculine. If you really want to be able to draw a variation of males that don't all look the same, you have to be comfortable with drawing body types. Sketch and play around with hair length, height, weight, if the torso is longer than the legs, or the legs are longer than the torso, or maybe they are even! Play with characters, too, to help define the body type. Are they angry and short? Are they lazy and tall? Are they rich and fat? Everyone's bodies are different, so keep that in mind when you are drawing people.

TRY TO AVOID:

As I stated before, NOT ALL MALES ARE MUSCULAR AND HOT AND NOT ALL FEMALES HAVE HUGE BOOBS AND SKINNY TORSOS. I'm TIRED of art and cartoons influencing young girls and boys to think that they need to be skinny or muscular! It leads to problems when they are teens because they feel they need to be that way, when having the "perfect body" is an almost impossible standard. I am also tired of kids being influenced that men and dominant and females are submissive, like the man does hard work with perfect muscles and the female stands there being pretty and is basically just an admirer that only exists to serve the man. Not everyone is like this, so when you are drawing males with females, keep this in mind! If kids who are future artists know this, you will change the world and help kids in the future. Your art is effective. I believe in you.

This is so helpful and so true! I like how you really aren't shy about addressing parts of anatomy such as body parts/types, and stereotypes. A lot of tutorials I've seen are basically tiptoeing around those things like: "This is anatomy. Draw a boy like a boy and a girl like a girl". It's so cool to me how you just flat out say "Males tend to have straight chests and women tend to have boobs because that is human anatomy." It's just so accurate! This is honestly really great!
