Really dig this one--looks like a 3D version of a old woodcute.

Thanks! This was before it was painted... one of those projects where I really liked it in its raw colors, but was equally pleased with the final paintjob after it was done. Y'know, of all things I haven't done a traditional woodcut yet. I should fix that when I find some flat wood.

Hm...not sure which I like better, now that I'm looking at them both. I take it you used a woodburner then, and that's where the black comes from?
A woodcut would be cool!

No woodburner, just chisels and the occasional file. When I'm done carving a piece I paint the whole thing black and then sand it until it gets to this kind of appearance. Then depending on the color and grain of the wood and how it looks at this stage either leave the natural color and sand it with very fine grain paper and polish it with a cloth, or paint several coats of different colors/transparencies of paint, to give age and variance in color and then polish it with cloth.

Ah! I wouldn't have thought it was paint but I guess that makes sense from a surface-finishing perspective.

Thank you!
This one is already in another collection, but I have a different one for sale right now. The links are in my most recent journal entry if you're still interested.
